No, We Do NOT Need to Protect Brendan Fraser, Ryan Field Books

No, We Do NOT Need to Protect Brandan Fraser

Years ago, Brendan Fraser was in a film titled, Gods and Monsters. In this film, he played the homophobic landscaper to a once famous older gay man. This was when Fraser has a great body, and he was just starting out. The older guy was infatuated with Fraser’s character but Fraser made it clear that he found the older gay man repulsive.

With that said, Fraser recently starred in a film where he played gayface, in a fat suit. And as Hollywood tends to do, he’s won awards. He even won awards of the excellent and wonderful performance of Austin Butler who really did deserve the awards. And each time Fraser has won an award he’s cried onstage, and people are claiming, “We need to protect Brendan Fraser at all cost.”

Well, not everyone thinks we should protect Fraser for playing gayface in a fat suit. And the article to which I’m linking now examines it in detail.

“To finally have a chance to be in a prestige film that might be award-nominated, where stories about people who look like us are being told? That’s the dream,” Franzese said. “So when they go time and time again and cast someone like Brendan Fraser, me and the other big queer guys, we’re like, ‘What the … ?’ We can’t take it!”

Here’s more. I think that comment says it all. And until we, as gay men, all ban together and start shouting out about this cultural appropriation in Hollywood and everywhere else like book publishing, it’s going to continue to happen.

Uncertainty on Amazon

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”

Brendan Fraser Plays Gayface in "The Whale" and Wears a Fatsuit, Ryan Field Books

Brendan Fraser Plays Gayface in “The Whale” and Wears a Fatsuit

I can still remember the first time I saw Brendan Fraser in a real film. It was Gods and Monsters and he played the hot young homophobic employee of an old gay Hollywood director of horror films. I still love the movie but I didn’t love Brendan Fraser’s character, not even with the ending where Fraser’s character tried to embrace the old director being gay.

Well, it looks as though good old straight Brendan has come a long way since then. He’s not hot and young anymore, so now he’s starring in a film called The Whale about an overweight gay man, and he wears a fat suit to play the part.

And not everyone is happy about this. Daniel Franzese from Mean Girls says he’s not thrilled with all the praise Fraser is getting for playing a fat gay man in a fat suit. Franzese states that other queer actors like him would love to play these roles. And that this is the problem with all of Hollywood. They always ignore the gay actors for the gay parts. (They do the same thing in book publishing. Straight women control the male romance genre, and no one says a word about it. It all started with Brokeback Mountain.)

The article goes on to mention a few more things Franzese said and I agree with them all.

You can read more, here.  Fraser will probably be nominated for an Oscar, and this is why I will never watch the Oscars again. They continue to do this to gay men year after year.

What really bothers me about all this is that The Whale is based on a play written by an openly gay man named Samuel D. Hunter. And how sad is that. How can we ever expect full equality when we can’t even support one another?? And to be even more honest, I wonder if I would do the same thing if someone wanted to make a film out of one of my books. Gay authors and actors don’t get many opportunities in this life.
