Are You Appropriating or Appreciating Queer Culture?

Are You Appropriating or Appreciating Queer Culture?

A very good gay male author friend of mine has been dealing with the attack of straight women writing gay fiction simply because he said he doesn’t believe that straight women can capture the authenticity of gay culture the same way gay men can do it. Which seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I’m not talking about readers. Readers should read whatever they want. Just authors, singers, actors, writers, and anyone who appropriates another culture. The story I’m linking to now is about how Madonna appropriated gay culture many years ago and thought nothing of it. But first, here’s a good definition of cultural appropriation.

Defining cultural appropriation isn’t easy. Typically, it’s used when members of a dominant group borrow the customs of another group, often one that’s experienced oppression in some way.

Here’s more. The excerpt above is not only accurate but it’s been happening for years to queer culture. And if you think my friend and I are the only ones talking about it you are living in a dream world. It happens to other marginalized groups, too. I don’t want to minimize that. I recently posted about how it was happening in Asian culture with a popular TV show called Kim’s Convenience

It goes on to mention how Madonna was accused of cultural appropriation. And that’s exactly what it was. With her straight white privilege, she made a lot of money.

But Madonna was accused of cultural appropriation, with many accusing her of profiting off of the work of the marginalized folk she worked with.

What readers are saying about “Uncertainty”

Amazon

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”

Billy Porter Calls Out Harry Styles' Straight White Privilege, Ryan Field Books

Billy Porter Calls Out Harry Styles’ Straight White Privilege

It has been truly amazing to watch the clueless straight white people not understand this. And many of them are so-called allies. Billy Porter has been breaking borders for years now with his gender-bending style. He’s worn dresses to the Oscars and other clothing that transcends what’s considered “normal.” Harry Styles is also known for shocking people with his outfits but in a much less authentic way. Styles doesn’t really identify as LGBTQ and he claimed he dislikes labels, which I find to be a lame excuse. It also insults all of us who have worked so hard for our labels and our equality. Billy Porter was not pleased and he called Harry Styles out for it.

He doesn’t care, he’s just doing it because it’s the thing to do,” he said. “This is politics for me. This is my life. I had to fight my entire life to get to the place where I could wear a dress to the Oscars and not be gunned now. All he has to do is be white and straight.”

Here’s more. Frankly, all labels be damned, I highly doubt that if wearing gender-bending outfits wasn’t the trendy thing to do, Harry Styles would be doing it. But since it’s trendy and Styles wants attention (and this gets the straight guy attention), guess what he’s doing.
