"Queer" Christmas Songs; Steve Grand’s Trevor LaPaglia; Gay Rights Miniseries on ABC TV

“Queer” Christmas Songs

It’s always interesting how so many older songs use the word gay in a different context. As in “bright and gay…” in the old song I’ll be seeing you. But I didn’t know there are gay Christmas songs…or as this article puts it “queer” songs. I think the main point for me with this is how words and communication tend to evolve over time.

Though holiday carols have been around for thousands of years, it wasn’t until recently that we finally had a batch of tunes that we could proudly call queer. Whether it’s because a song is being sung by an out artist or because of how campy it is, the tracks in the slideshow below comprise some of our favorites — some old, some new, some serious, some seriously ridiculous — to provide you with a soundtrack for all of your holiday activities.

This article was released a year ago, and I haven’t heard the word “queer” used quite as often by anyone in the gay community as I did last year or the year before that. I don’t know what that means and I’m not taking the time to find out. All I know is I don’t use it and neither do any of the gay people I know in RL. I don’t mind it and I understand it. But I don’t use it.

Steve Grand’s Trevor LaPaglia

In case you happened to miss it, there’s a great new video out by Steven Grand for Christmas and he’s actually made it gay oriented with gay romance scenes. I’m almost ashamed to admit that seeing two men this way in a video, even though I’ve lived most of my adult this way in RL, is oddly shocking even to me. But that’s because we’re so used to seeing nothing but heteronormative romance scenes everywhere it’s become a novelty of sorts…at least for the time being. That’s going to change.

Trevor LaPaglia did not expect to expect to spend last weekend snuggling, kissing and hanging ornaments with Steve Grand.

But he did for Grand’s new holiday video All I Want For Christmas is You which hit YouTube on Monday (21 December) and had more than 90,000 views in its first 12 hours.

LaPaglia, 26, first met Grand a few years ago during the gay ski week event Elevation which is held each year at California’s Mammoth Lakes.

You can check that out here.

I think Grand is not only breaking ground, but he’s becoming a master at promotion. I also think that someday there are going to be an awful lot of old men in the nursing home named Trevor.

Gay Rights Miniseries on ABC TV

There’s a new miniseries coming to ABC that was written by Dustin Lance Black that focuses on the gay rights movement from Stonewall in 1969 to the present.

The team that brought a 2008 feature film about slain gay civil rights hero Harvey Milk to the screen is reuniting for a gay rights miniseries to air on ABC.

The network on Monday (21 December) officially greenlit When We Rise, an eight-hour miniseries written by Dustin lance Black who won the Academy Award for his screenplay for Milk.

Gus Van Sant, Oscar nominated for directing Milk, will direct the first two-hpur episode and Milk producer Bruce Cohen is on board to executive produce the miniseries with Black.

I can’t help but wonder how this will make out with ratings. The documentary I was in, The State of Marriage, was in the making for many years and it was timely for the story it told. However, it wasn’t released until after SCOTUS ruled on same sex marriage and I think that took some of the interest away from it. I haven’t even seen it yet and I was in it. And I can’t help but wonder if ABC isn’t going to suffer the same consequences with this miniseries. Of course the content is still relevant and will be forever, from a cultural POV. I’m just not sure if people are going to tune in the same way they might have tuned in four or five years ago.

The most interesting thing I’ve noticed with gay culture is that we seem to be assimilating into the mainstream these days far more…and faster…than any other minority I could name. Steve Grand’s video above is a good example of what I’m talking about. It’s gay content, but also about as heteronormative as it can get. And it’s what people want, or at least it seems to be.

You can check this out here.  The comments, so far, don’t sound too encouraging for this miniseries. I’ll definitely record it and watch it later on DVR.

Male Full Frontal Nudity Dustin McNeer

Dustin McNeer from America’s Next Top Model has full frontal nude photos online that were allegedly leaked.

Well Christmas has apparently come early this year, as another ANTM contestant, Dustin McNeer of the most recent (and final) cycle, now has the distinct honor of sharing his nether regions with the world.

You can check it out here. This link is SFW, but there’s another link over there that will lead you to the NSFW photo.

I never see why male full frontal nudity is such a big thing for people. Probably because we don’t see it that often, but I’m not totally sure. The other thing I wonder about is the way someone commented. I don’t see how anyone could complain about McNeer’s penis. But I guess there are always a few who will never be happy with anything they see.

Priest Allegedly Steals 1 Mil For Rent Boy Lover

This is really an unusual story. I’ve heard a lot over the years, but this one made me stop and think twice. I think the word alleged is critical with stories like this.

Rev. Peter Miqueli is being accused of stealing more than $1 million in donations in order to pay for sex and support his “rent boy lover.”

On Thursday, the lawsuit was filed by furious parishioners, who accused Miqueli of siphoning cash from the donation plate at the various Churches he worked at.

He’s also been accused of stealing money in order to purchase a hot tub, drugs, and various sex toys.

I can’t comment on this one, but I can tell you for certain that I personally knew two other high ranking Catholic priests here in the town where I live who lived totally double lives while they were here…and they had a very young gay lover they supported, too. I know nothing about where they got the money to give him and I would assume it was all honest.

Philadelphia Alleged Gay Basher In Court

Here’s another follow up on the alleged gay bashing story in Philadelphia that happened in September of 2014. The guys involved in the case plea bargained earlier this year, however, the woman is standing trial right now.

Alleged gay basher and Jack Daniels aficionado Kathryn Knott‘s trail started off with a bang, to say the least.

“You dirty fucking faggot. Is that your fucking boyfriend? Fucking faggot, fucking faggot, fucking faggot,” Assistant D.A. Allison Ruth said during her opening statements against Knott yesterday at a Philadelphia Common Pleas Court court.

Ruth was, of course, quoting Knott, who is accused of participating in a violent attack against a gay couple in September 2014. The 25-year-old is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and conspiracy.

Here’s the rest.

There are homophobic tweets and over 40 comments as of now. It’s a jury trial, not a bench trial, so the outcome should be interesting.

Rainbow Detective Agency: Saying Goodbye

Here is the latest book in The Rainbow Detective series titled, Saying Goodbye. You can find this almost everywhere from  Smashwords to iTunes, and I’m posting the Amazon link below. And, this book will be available in a print paperback version as well.

Blurb:

In this next installment of The Rainbow Detective Agency: Saying Goodbye, Proctor and Blair find themselves faced with a legal, moral and ethical dilemma. When a new client wants to hire them for the most unusual case they’ve ever come across, they’re both faced with a decision that calls upon their deepest darkest demons.

While this is going on, Kevin has become part of their relationship for the long term and no one is certain where that is going. Although Kevin fits into their lives and he creates a balance they never expected to find, there are moments when things get complicated.

It’s about life and death combined with dignity and romance, and the right to believe in something so controversial it’s still considered illegal in most places. In the end Proctor faces one of the most difficult decisions of his life so far, and learning to say goodbye is the only thing that will bring him the happy ending he desperately desires.

There is going to be another Rainbow Detective book coming out in the next few months tentatively titled, Rancho Mirage.

Trevor Donovan Art

Normally I wouldn’t post about something like this, about any other person out there, but this is so different I think a lot of my blog (and fiction) readers will appreciate it. When I first saw it I was floored…in a good way. Kind of like the way you react when you walk into a piano bar and someone starts to sing and it’s absolutely spectacular.

I’m not joking. Donovan, an actor many of you are familiar with from Beverly Hills 90210, graduated college with a degree in graphic arts and he recently tweeted a piece of work he created. It’s the image of Marilyn Monroe. But it’s not just another Monroe image. This one is different from anything you’ve ever seen. There’s a sharp, clean quality to it, and the expression and the eyes are amazing.

I can’t share it here on the blog because I don’t like to do that without permission…after all, it’s someone’s art, their copyright. However, here is a link to the twitter page where you can see it yourselves.

I don’t think he has any other works out there to view, but if I see any I’ll mention them. I find some art fascinating, which is why I opened an art gallery of my own right out of college in New Hope, PA. I owned the gallery for ten years and worked in publishing, writing part time. I repped a lot of original artists and I loved being surrounded by art. I sold art work to celebrities from New York and to ordinary people buying wedding gifts, and I still remember each piece I had. The only reason I closed the gallery was because I wanted to work full time in publishing, but that doesn’t mean I don’t feel the same way about art now.

Dear Author-Ellora’s Cave Lawsuit

I haven’t been following this closely, but I did see a tweet about it late last night and I figured I would follow up on a post I did in the fall of 2014 about it. I’m not linking to that post I wrote because it really doesn’t say anything other than the basic facts. Writing strictly as a blogger, I absolutely believe in remaining objective when it comes to things like this.

In short, Ellora’s Cave filed a lawsuit against Jane Litte who runs the Dear Author blog in 2014 and this is the conclusion.

As you might have heard, I settled the EC lawsuit.

I want to set the record straight on a few things regarding my September 16, 2014, post about Ellora’s Cave. I made some errors and want to correct them:

Gay Son Competes With Gay Dad

Here’s a story about a gay son who is frustrated because his gay dad is always hitting on younger men…in front of him.

Verbatim…

“Sup bros? My dad is in his late 50s and he has a penchant for younger gaybros… And by younger I mean YOUNG… my age. I’m in my younger twenties. The other night we went to my friend’s restaurant. The owner is a good friend of mine who I went to grade school with…. My dad was hitting on him, hard. And it was making me feel quite uncomfortable. Apparently he goes to my friend’s restaurant a lot. I saw in his phone too he has all of these shirtless pictures of MY friend saved to his camera roll. This is really creeping me out. I also believe my dad has been helping out younger gay guys my age with college. I don’t know if they are having sex though. This is really concerning me and I don’t know what to do. I thought he was past his midlife crisis but now I don’t know what to think.”

Didn’t they used to call gay dudes like this dad “chicken hawks?”

In any event, you can read more here…and there are comments.  I don’t see anything wrong with guys who date guys who are not their own ages, however, have a little decorum if your son is around. People might wind up laughing at you instead of with you and you’ll never even know it’s happening.
