The Pansy Project: Put a Pansy in It

The main reason why I’m posting about The Pansy Project is because it’s the first time I’ve seen something that actively makes a strong statement against Vladimir Putin and what is happening in Russia right now to LGBTI people. Other than the basic sentiments on which most of us already agree, I just haven’t seen anything aggressive happening and the Sochi games are only a few weeks away and just recently a gay man in Russia was arrested and detained for unfolding the gay flag in public. Any LGBTI people entering Russia for the games have been assured safety as long as they don’t come into contact with children.

The Pansy Project was started by a unisex clothing company, in collaboration with Check Me Out Textiles, in order to sell T-shirts and other items that make bold statements. And one of those statements is putting a pansy in Vladimir Putin’s mouth.

We’re excited to present a new collaboration with The Pansy Project. The ‘Put a Pansy in it’ sweatshirt is a call to arms, a request for everyone to resist homophobia in all its forms. The Pansy Project has been planting pansies at the site of homophobic abuse for the past eight years, and has explored the creative potential of this concept in a variety of ways. This sweatshirt is a wearable protest to promote The Pansy Project’s anti-homophobia message.

At least it’s a statement, and they aren’t just sitting back waiting for someone else to say something.

Houston Mayor Marries in California

The mayor of Houston, Texas is a lesbian. Due to the fact that same sex marriage is not legal in Texas she and her partner had to travel to California to get married.

Parker and longtime partner Kathy Hubbard were married on Thursday (16 January) in the gay-friendly city of Palm Springs in California.

Same-sex marriage is banned in Texas but became legal in California last June following a US Supreme Court ruling.

The ceremony took place at sunset at a private home and was held on the Parker and Hubbard’s 23rd anniversary as a couple.

Tony and I are getting married at the end of this month in Vermont because our state, Pennsylvania, doesn’t recognize same-sex marriage. We will be recognized as a married couple in all the states that have legalized same sex marriage so far, and also when and if PA decides to legalize it in the future. But when we return from Vermont we still won’t be legally married in our own home.

It’s nice that we’ve come this far, but it’s still kind of sad when you think about it that the mayor of one of the biggest cities in Texas can’t even marry her partner where she lives.
