The Golden Girls and Gays

This week there have been tons of photos floating around social media from the RT Convention in Vegas. In short, it’s a book event for romance book lovers. In many of those photos I have seen one thing consistently happen. There are photos with one gay man who is surrounded by tons of women. And good for them. They seem to be having fun, which is the most important thing. I’m honestly not sure what that’s about, but I think it has something to do with the appeal The Golden Girls has for some gay men.

With that said, a new book about The Golden Girls is discussed in the article I’m linking to now.  Golden Girls Forever: An Unauthorized Look Behind the Lanai has gone into great detail…from the way it sounds…by examining everything possible, including the fact that there was very little gay influence on the show. The writers were all straight men.

The perceived notion that a gaggle of bitter gay comedy writers had to have been behind the dialogue and storylines is actually a myth. Colucci learned from Marc Cherry, a gay man who wrote on the show’s fifth season with his fellow gay writer Jamie Wooten, that the expectation was the show’s writers room must be some huge queer party. But Cherry (who went on to create Desperate Housewives and Devious Maids) came onto the show to find a bunch of straight guys coming up with lines for slutty Blanche, wisecracking Sophia, ditzy Rose and the queen of all comebacks and asides, the cynical Dorothy.

You can read the rest here. Again, I think the comments are interesting with this one. Some gay men don’t understand why other gay men love TGG so much. I liked the show, but I liked it for the comedy, not the hair styles or the dresses. Frankly, I couldn’t care less about what women are wearing. And I think this just shows how once again gay men are so highly diverse…and how none of the stereotypes really work anymore.  We are just beginning to realize this. For a long time I thought there was something wrong because I didn’t care about Cher.

I also think there are other reasons why some gay men like The Golden Girls so much, one of which has to do with the fact that the show did touch on some gay topics during a time when no one else was doing it. We never had *true* gay content, and for the most part, with a few slim exceptions, we still don’t have it.

Air France’s Gay Stewards

First, I didn’t think anyone used the word “steward” anymore. I thought it was simply “flight attendant.” I guess I was wrong?

In any event, gay stewards with Air France are speaking up now.

Gay stewards for Air France outraged over Iran’s stance on homosexuality are crying foul over the re-opened Paris to Tehran route — and some are refusing to work on it.

One steward started a petition on Change.org titled “Gay stewards from Air France don’t want to fly to the death penalty in Iran” that has over 15,000 supporters.

There’s more here.

The Gay Gene

This is about research regarding men and women who might be carrying the gay gene.

In layman’s terms, this means so-called “gay genes” are continuously passed down through the generations in spite of the fact that homosexuals are still relatively unlikely to have children.

The research suggests that gay men’s sisters tend to have more children, which may help explain how homosexuality persists in larger populations.

Meanwhile, heterosexual men could also carry genes predisposing them to being gay.

Here’s the rest. I don’t know enough about this to even begin to comment. But it’s a fascinating topic I think we all wonder about.
