Gay Family Circle

I received one of those magazine gifts last year for Family Circle Magazine and my first thought was OMG, now I have this to throw away, too. Although I still get several print magazines, the only one I order myself is Architectural Digest and I wind up throwing the rest away. I get my news…and everything…online. I also never see anything LGBT related in mainstream publications and the content doesn’t interest me. Plus, the last thing I need in my life is more clutter from print magazines.

However, as I was glancing through the most recent issue of FC, I noticed a feature story with two gay men…married with two children. The piece is in a new section of FC, titled “Modern Life,” with a caption on the first page that reads, “Our biggest challenge? Finding time to sit down to dinner together!” There’s a photo of two perfect gay dads, with their two perfect kids, that could have been a photo of Ozzie and Harriet 60 years ago.

I can’t find an online link to the magazine, but I did find this piece about the new “Modern Life” section in FC.

A new “Modern Life” feature, which highlights nontraditional families, marks perhaps the biggest leap forward for the magazine’s content. “I didn’t think we were doing the best job of addressing all the different types of families,” admitted Fears. “We thought shows like Modern Family were actually doing a better job.”

Ironically, last night I was catching up with the TV show, Modern Family, on demand. I’m still not a huge fan of the show in a general sense, but I can’t say that I don’t find it interesting to see how they continue to mainstream gay people into society. I don’t talk much about assimilation here on the blog, and that’s mainly because I don’t think it’s possible to avoid this kind of assimilation anymore. With the equality we’ve been fighting for all this time there comes a price, and with that price comes changes in gay culture as we’ve always known it. In other words, you’re not going to see or hear anything about drag shows, prison parties, Sunday afternoon tea dance, or anything even remotely related to gay culture on TV shows like MF or in magazines like FC.

And I think many gay people crave this heteronormative lifestyle. So why shouldn’t FC put up a stupid, ridiculous feature with two gay dads the same way the do with hetero people? They’ve been doing this for years with hetero people and making fools out of them. It’s only fair we get our turn now.

You can read more here about Family Circle, if you find that sort of thing interesting.

 Michael Sam Cut From Cowboys

This one bothers me. The Dallas Cowboys cut openly gay pro football player, Michael Sam from the practice team, after being there since 9/3 and never making the 53- man roster. Previously, he was cut from the SL Rams.

‘Sam, the first openly-gay player in the NFL, was a seventh-round draft pick of the Rams,’ the statement continued. ‘He spent all of the offseason and training camp with the St. Louis before being released and signed to the Cowboys’ practice squad.’

The team noted the spot will be filled by linebacker Troy Davis, a second-year professional.

Sam used Twitter to thank the team. ‘I want to thank the Jones family and the entire Cowboys organization for this opportunity, as well as my friends, family, teammates, and fans for their support,’ he wrote

You can read more here. Sam goes on to make a gracious comment, without a hint of bitterness. He plans to continue his career as a pro player.

There’s not much more about this story yet, and it seems as though no one wants to even touch the subject. I wonder why. Maybe they should all start reading Family Circle’s “Modern Life” section of at the NFL.

Downton Abbey Gay Cure

One of the things I enjoy most about historical shows like Downton Abbey is the way we can reflect on the idiocy that was supposed to be correct back in those days. I was watching The Knick last night and the cure for a drug addiction was giving the addict heroin. I’m not joking about that. And in the upcoming season of DA the gay character, Thomas Barrow, is supposedly going to get injections that will cure him from being attracted to men. The word gay wasn’t used until the 1970’s and I hate using it in reference to same sex situations prior to that.

Julian Fellowes said in an interview with ITV, ‘He falls for the quackery that this can be cured, that he can get rid of this dumbbell he is dragging around with him. His fortitude takes him through a period of incredible physical discomfort.’

‘The result he seeks is impossible – it’s not to be obtained by any medical treatment, it was just quackery.’

Unfortunately, there are still quacks out there who believe gays can be cured.

Ariana Grande On Catholicism and Gay Brother Frankie

Pop singer, Ariana Grande, disclosed that she renounced her Catholic roots in support of her openly gay brother, Frankie Grande. For those who don’t know, Frankie is a talented performer who was recently on Big Brother this past summer. I can’t recall the name of the play, but he just landed a new gig on Broadway.

‘When my brother was told that God didn’t love him I was like, “OK, that’s not cool,”‘ she said in an interview with Sunday Telegraph magazine.

‘They were building a Kabbalah center in Florida so we both checked it out and really had a connection with it.’

She said since renouncing Catholicism for Kabbalah, her life has changed for the better.

Although no one in our families has done anything similar, Tony and I are non-practicing Catholics for the same reasons Ariana left the church. If we ever decided to adopt a child I would want him/her to grow up with some kind of religion, but it wouldn’t be Catholicism. I know most practicing Catholics do support gays, and I even know a few priests who do, too. But the big picture is more important in a case like this.

One thing is certain, you never have to wonder why the Catholic church seems to be losing people as each year passes.

Free Gay Excerpt: Too Hard to Handle; Gay Republican Accused in Sex Assault; Zach Rance Gay For You Story

Gay Republican Accused in Sex Assault

I’ve posted about this guy before as an openly gay Republican running for congress. In spite of the reality, this is still something of a novelty to most people. People automatically assume all LGBTI people in the US are Democrats, which isn’t always the case. In fact, I’m seeing a lot of younger gay men “come out” as Republicans who are liberal on social issues and more conservative fiscally.

In any event, this isn’t about politics, at least not in a literal, debatable sense. A gay Republican, Carl DeMaio, is running for congress and he’s been accused of sexual assault by a former staff member, Todd Bosnich.

Todd Bosnich
Todd Bosnich

.
Bosnich, who is also gay, claimed in a CNN interview that DeMaio called him into his office and masturbated in front of him, made inappropriate advances, massaging and kissing his neck, and groping him.

On one occasion last April, Bosnich said he arrived early at campaign headquarters and was called by DeMaio to go to his office.

When he got there, he found the door open and saw DeMaio masturbating. ‘I saw his hand, his penis in his hand and he had a smile on his face. And as soon as I came over he was looking at me,’ he was quoted as saying by CNN.

You can read the rest here.   There’s a photo of DeMaio and he’s a nice looking guy in that cub sort of way.

Zach Rance Gay For You Story

This is the guy I’ve posted about before who was having an interesting relationship with an openly gay guy in the Big Brother house this summer. The cute sickening name for this is “Bromance.” His name is Zach Rance and he’s speaking about the bromance experience he shared with Frankie Grande, the gay houseguest. Notice how he makes a point of telling us he’s “obviously straight.” I don’t really get that. Why is it so obvious? Rock Hudson was “obviously straight” for years, and I could name hundreds more like that.

‘I’m obviously straight, I’ve made that clear millions of times,’ Rance tells Out.com.

Good for you, Zach. We’re all thrilled.

‘The fact that I was cuddling with a gay guy, giving him a massage . . . you know, let’s be real – guys give other guys massages. It’s not a big deal. I don’t care that he was gay. I was never afraid that he would try to kiss me. If he tried to kiss me, I would have said, “no, it’s not like that,” and I would have continued to be friends with him.’

Good for you again, Zach. We all thank you for your support.

Rance thinks their affection for each other might inspire more such bromances.

Don’t pat yourself on the back too hard Zach, it’s bad for the shoulder. I’ve had straight male friends long before Zach Rance came around and so have most of the gay men I know.

‘I feel like I was kind of a role model for some people on the show who might look at me and say, “Wow, Zach’s a really cool guy and he’s best friends with a gay guy, so why can’t I be best friends with a gay guy?” We don’t know the impact it’s going to have on the world, but it’ll definitely be a positive one.’

It’s only going to be positive to those who don’t understand the meaning of passive aggressive homophobia. The rest of the world is wondering WTF, dude!

For his part, Grande told Out last week said of the relationship: ‘…There’s definitely an attraction. Absolutely. … Both ways. For sure. Zach kept saying, “I wish I were gay so I could be with you,” and I was eventually like, “Yeah, I wish you were gay, too.”’

I could probably rant on this topic and these comments until the middle of next week. But I’m not going to do that. Even though I don’t think he knows it, every comment Rance made is an example of passive aggressive homophobia and an insult to all LGBTI people. If you have to ask why, does it matter?

You can read more here.  Guys like Rance need to learn a lot more about this passive aggressive homophobia. The kind that still promotes shame, and treats us as if we’re not as good as they are…at least if he’s going to consider himself a role model.

The saddest part of it all is that there will still be people who don’t realize why I commented the way I just did. Look at it this way. How would it sound if Rance was gay and Grande was straight and Rance made those exact same comments?

Free Excerpt: Too Hard to Handle by Ryan Field

Here’s an unpublished excerpt from the latest book in the Glendora Hill series, Too Hard to Handle. Please keep in mind these excerpts never before published are from the original raw manuscripts because they format better on google blogger. One thing I get into with this book is how “gay” cowboys were treated in the early days of the old wild west. It’s not a history book, but I make a few observations I thought were important.

Too Hard to Handle
by Ryan Field

He threw a pair of shorts on, and then grabbed T-shirt and running shoes. When he reached the back staircase that would lead him to the kitchen, he stopped midway down the steps, took a deep breath to calm down, and put on his shirt and shoes. After that, he headed down the steps with calm even moves so no one would ask him questions.  It was later than usual for him to get up and he knew his dads would both be in the kitchen by then. He wanted to go outside through the side door without being seen by anyone so he could hop in the car and go looking for Cass.
At that moment, he felt a combination of frustration and anger. Frustration because he didn’t know what to expect next with Cass, and anger because he had a feeling Cass had run out on him and he’d never get a chance to do this TV show. As much as he did like being with Cass in every sense, he’d begun to admit to himself that getting this TV segment could improve his career as a web caster and lead to more opportunities in the future. The only thing about it he didn’t love was that he had to be on camera with Cass. He would have preferred to do something behind the scenes where he felt more comfortable.
As he reached the bottom of the staircase, he heard his dads talking in the kitchen. He was about to turn right in the hallway to head toward the library without being seen when he noticed something unusual. His dads weren’t talking the way they normally did in the morning. They were louder and their voices were more animated. He stood and waited to see if he could listen to what they were saying.
            Sebastian laughed at something.
His other dad, Avery, laughed even louder.
Then Dan pressed his palm to his chest and leaned back into the wall when he heard Cass say, “That’s only one short story about my life as an openly gay cowboy. I’m just a simple good old gay cowboy who likes to move around a lot to keep things real.” Cass was really laying it on thick, too. He spoke with his most exaggerated Texas cowboy accent, to the point of being the worst south western stereotype. And Dan’s two dads seemed to love every moment of it.
For a moment, Dan stood there with his mouth open and his eyes wide. He wasn’t sure what to do now. He finally realized he had no choice. He had to go into the kitchen, face them all, and figure out what Cass had told them about being in the house.
He took a quick breath and turned toward the kitchen. When he entered he found them all sitting at the long harvest table in the dining area of the huge elaborate kitchen and Cass was facing him.
The moment he entered, Cass pointed and said, “There’s our boy.” He sent Dan a smug smile. “Did you get your beauty sleep, cowboy?”
Dan sent him a look and said, “I slept just fine, thank you.”
“Good,” Cass said. He turned toward Sebastian and poked him in the arm with his elbow and laughed again. “I was worried my snoring might keep you all up. I already explained to your dads, Dan, that you were nice enough to let me spend the night in that fantastic guest bedroom next to your bedroom.” He turned to Sebastian, and then to Avery. “And I’d really like to thank you men for letting me crash here last night. I haven’t had a good night’s sleep like that since Clinton was President.”
For some reason Dan couldn’t fathom, his dads found that comment laughable. In fact, anything Cass said or did made them smile or laugh.
Sebastian ignored Dan and said, “Don’t think twice about it, Cass. We’re honored to have you as our guest for as long as you want to stay.”
Avery squared his back and said, “That’s right, Cass. You can stay as long as you want. We love having you here.”
Dan knew he’d better play along so no one would think he’d been sleeping with Cass. So he jumped into the conversation fast. “I think Cass wants to find a place of his own.”
Cass sent him an obtuse grin. “Actually, I kind of like it here. I’m in no rush.” He shoved a huge apple muffin into his mouth and gobbled it with a few swallows. “I’ve never had a muffin that tasted this good in my entire life.”
Dan knew how Sebastian would react to that comment. Sebastian was known in Glendora Hill for his culinary skills, especially his apple muffins. This ability to zoom in on things like this seemed to be a gift with Cass. It was part of his charm and it was what made him so irresistible to everyone. Sebastian and Avery had no idea this compliment had been Cass’s successful attempt in what Dan could see what a campaign of emotional seduction.
“It’s my own recipe,” Sebastian said. “I make them from scratch. I make everything from scratch. We’re having pot roast and twice baked potatoes tonight for dinner. You have to join us, Cass.”
Dan shook his head and made a face at Cass. He didn’t want him getting too close to his dads.
Cass smiled at Dan and said, “I’d love to join you tonight. I just don’t want to be a pest, is all. I’m just a big dumb cowboy.”
Avery patted Cass on the back. “Nonsense. You’re going to be a big star around here very soon. People are still talking about the web cast you did with Dan and I’m sure this TV segment is going to make you very popular. We’re honored to have you here.” He looked back at Dan. “Aren’t we, son?”
Dan shrugged. “Yes. Honored.” What else could he say?
“Did you know that Cass is actually related to the famous Texas Ranger, Kit Acklin?” Sebastian asked, turning in Dan’s direction. “He’s a blood relative on his grandfather’s side.”
Dan wanted to roll his eyes but he just stood there faking a smile. “Yes, I’ve heard.” He couldn’t believe Cass had already gotten into the Kit Acklin routine that early in the morning. Dan still wasn’t sure Cass was even remotely related to Kit Acklin. At least everyone else believed him. And there was probably no way to prove him wrong.
Avery looked at Dan and asked, “Why didn’t you tell us Cass was here? We could have planned something better for breakfast. I feel terrible now.”
“I didn’t know he was going to be here until late last night,” Dan said. It was the first truthful statement he’d made that morning.
“I’m just fine,” Cass said. He gestured to the large basket of muffins on the table and a bowl of fruit. “This is like a feast compared to what this old cowboy is used to in the morning.”
“I’ll make my famous eggs benedict tomorrow morning,” Sebastian said. “I have a secret ingredient.”
Avery leaned toward Cass and spoke in a lower tone. “It’s cayenne. He puts it in the hollandaise sauce. He thinks no one knows, but Dot Hennessy figured it out a while ago.”
“That’s not it,” Sebastian said. He seemed visibly shaken by this disclosure. “And I’m never telling anyone. Dot Hennessey can try to guess all she wants. She’ll neverknow.”
Although Dan truly loved his dads and the routine they had when it came to these things, he didn’t want to stand there all day making small talk about eggs. He poured himself a mug of black coffee and said, “I’m going upstairs to phone Serena Dwyer at the TV station to set up an appointment. I’m sure she’ll want to meet Cass this morning.”
Cass sent him a glance and said, “I already called her. I introduced myself. We’re meeting her at one this afternoon. She’s in meetings all morning.” He smiled at Avery and said, “I hope you don’t mind that I used your telephone.”
“No problem,” Avery said. “Our home is your home.”
            “Feel free,” Sebastian said.
It was evident that Dan’s dads didn’t think it was possible that he might have slept with Cass. Maybe they thought there was too much of an age difference. After all, Cass was only a few years younger than Sebastian.
“Well, then,” Dan said. “I’d better go up and get ready for work.” He was scheduled to work at the saddle shop that morning. “I’m going to have to take some time off this afternoon for the meeting. Hope that’s okay, dad.” He was talking to Sebastian. Avery rarely got involved with anything at the saddle shop.
“It’s fine,” Sebastian said. “In fact, now that you’ll be doing this TV segment I’ve been thinking about rearranging the hours a little. One of the new tenants in the apartments above the shop asked if anyone around town was hiring part time. He works part time at the Marshall ranch with Judd and he said he’s looking to make extra money. I think I’ll ask him if he’s interested in taking on your morning hours, Dan, since you’ll probably be busy at the TV station from now on.”
Dan felt a lump in his gut. “Hold on, dad. We haven’t even agreed to do this yet. I don’t know what it will pay either. Don’t hire anyone until everything is set in writing.” The saddle shop had always been Dan’s comfort zone. He loved his work there, he loved the people he saw every day, and he could have spent the rest of his life in that shop without an issue.
Avery nodded in agreement. “I think he’s right, Sebastian. Let’s see how this TV segment pans out before you do anything.”
Sebastian frowned, as if he didn’t agree. Dan had seen this expression before and he knew that it meant Sebastian already had big plans for him. Sebastian nodded and said, “Okay. But take the whole day off today and show Cass around town. I’m sure he’d love to see more of Glendora Hill, and you two guys can get to know each other better, too.”
Dan almost laughed aloud that time. He already knew Cass about as well as a man could know another man. “I don’t want to hold Cass back, dad. I’m sure he has plans of his own this morning and he doesn’t need me tagging along.”
“Nonsense,” Cass said. He smiled at Dan and folded his big arms across his chest. “I’d love to hang out with you today, buddy. You can start by taking me out to Silver Lining Ranch. I’ve heard a lot about the ranch this morning. We can go for a quick ride before we meet with this TV producer.”
Before Dan had a chance to reply, his dads jumped into the conversation and they started talking about Silver Lining Ranch again and how much Cass would love it. Dan sat down on a stool at the island in the middle of the kitchen and sipped his coffee. As he watched his dads go into detail about the ranch, he sighed and thought about how deeply involved he’d become with Cass without even trying too hard. He noticed Cass didn’t seem to be thinking about anything in particular. He kept sending Dan quick glances from the table and winking as if he knew a huge secret he couldn’t wait to disclose. That was the part about all this that bothered Dan the most. Cass seemed to have this impression all this was some sort of colossal joke. For Dan it was much more. He was rejoining the world again and he wasn’t sure he wanted to do it this fast.

‘I’m obviously straight, I’ve made that clear millions of times,’ Rance tells Out.com.
Rance thinks their affection for each other might inspire more such bromances.

Queerty on James Franco; Ariana Grande on Gay Bully; Blogging vs Writing Credits; Ice Bucket Hot Guys;

Queerty on James Franco

Update below on Franco and ice bucket challenge.

The other day I posted about James Franco and the topic of passive aggressive homophobia, which he seems to have mastered. I’m not commenting much here. I’m reluctantly posting about the subject this time with two links simply because I wanted to show that I’m not the only one who’s noticed this about Franco. Frankly, I’m bored with it all.

But Queerty recently commented about Franco and homophobia in this piece, which backs up my previous posts almost to the last letter. That doesn’t always happen in such an accidental way, so I guess I’m not the only one.

Franco, a heterosexual man who has previously used gay sex, plagiarized work from gay artistsstarted his own gay rumors and fueled gay rumors about his brother for the benefit of his own career, draws the line HERE.

So for those of you taking notes, James Franco pretty much just labeled his own MO as homophobic

And here’s a link to a more recent piece about Franco’s latest attempts to self-promote his new film with gay content. I didn’t know about the plagiarism allegations until now.

Because it’s only ok for James Franco to give a wink to his non-gay gayness, not anybody else, the actor is back again with some more uploads.

I haven’t decided whether or not I’m going to see Franco’s newest film, Michael. Of course by even stating that I’m helping him promote it right here on my own blog. I know that, and I know the difference. And I never once said that Franco wasn’t a clever little guy either.

Do I think Franco is a homophobe? Actually, no. I just think he’s an aging starlet looking for his last hurrah.

Ariana Grande on Gay Bully

Ariana Grande is a pop singer and her brother, Frankie, is participating in Big Brother 16 this summer. Frankie is openly gay (and adorable), but he’s been keeping his sister’s fame a secret. Frankie recently disclosed his sister’s fame and his real identity to the other houseguests in the Big Brother house and someone commented about him on Ariana’s social media with a negative gay slur. As a result, Ariana went to Frankie’s defense and buried the online troll.

She said: ‘That “homo” is the fiercest, most incredible, funniest, most intelligent, kind hearted and most LOVED person on the face of the planet!

‘he also cleaned up his game and told the truth to everybody in the house WHICH by the way, nobody else on the show has done.

‘so i don’t give a flying fuck if or when he comes home!!! he is incredible and i am SO proud!!!!

‘oh and also “that homo” gets more ass than you’ll ever get in your life. k miss thing?’

How do I know all this? Admittedly, I’ve been a huge Big Brother fan since the show began a long time ago. I like the game, the concept, and the strategy of the game. I’m a poker player and in many ways the BB game is like poker. Personally, I think Frankie ruined his hand by disclosing his sister’s fame way too soon. People don’t like being duped with fake identities these days. But I could be wrong about that. He’s one of the strongest players in the house this summer…or ever.

In any event, you can read more here.

Blogging vs Writing Credits

For those authors who are new, or new to querying, I thought I’d link to this next article. I don’t always agree with this blogger on everything, but sometimes…more often than not…she nails it, and this is something I would have overlooked as a given and never mentioned at all.

But I do think it’s important to know the difference between publishing credits and blogging/platform. Even here on this blog, where I blog for free, I never consider a single word I write as a publishing/writing credit. I think of blogging as a casual hobby and as a way to talk about things I see in pop culture, publishing, or in LGBTI news. Or, a way to promote/review sometimes. I don’t always care about grammar when I write here because I work fast. It’s also a place where I can talk about my books, which unfortunately I haven’t done often enough in the last four thousand posts.

In any event, here’s what publishing/writing credits are all about:

A writing credit is work that has been curated, edited or selected in some way.  Most work published on websites isn’t curated. You submit a post, it’s posted. That’s GOOD for your platform, but it’s not a writing credit.

You can read the rest here.

When it comes to these little things you might not think they’re important. But they are in the sense that the more you know about the publishing industry and how it works the more professional you’ll be. And even though a lot of things have changed, a lot have remained the same. Querying agents is one of them. You don’t want to screw that up, because those ridiculous trumped up stories about literary agents finding a self-pubbed author and going into “a fit of shaking excitement” in the middle of the night come few and far between. Most of the time agents take on writers through the query process, and most serious writers would prefer an agent take them on that way…instead of in a fit of shaking excitement. You want an agent for the long term, not for the next kindle bestseller.

Ice Bucket Hot Guys

I’ve seen my fair share of comments about the ice bucket challenge this summer and I’m not sure it’s all that bad. I even saw Ethel Kennedy on TV yesterday morning doing it. Someone actually dumped a bucket of ice water over the poor woman’s head and she took it in her stride. It’s all in fun, and Ethel’s always been a good sport.

In any event, the ice bucket challenge is about raising awareness and money for ALS…people living with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. And Ethel hasn’t been the only one doing it. A lot of the hottest guys on the planet have been taking part.

Here’s how it works: someone challenges you to dump a bucket of ice on your head within 24 hours and upload it to social media or else make a donation to ALS. Seems a little counterproductive since the whole idea is to avoid donating, but it’s an awareness thing so fine. Then once you complete the challenge, you nominate more people to participate.

You can read more here, and see video images of guys like Justin Timberlake taking part. You’ll be there for a while.

The only thing that makes me wonder is that I haven’t actually seen anyone dump a bucket of ice. It always looks like a bucket of water. Maybe I’m being too literal.

So far, we haven’t seen James Franco do it yet…but give him time.

Update: Did I call it or what? Everything in life should be this easy 🙂

Matt Bomer’s Final White Collar; Gay Big Brother 16; Neil Patrick Harris’ Nude Selfie

Matt Bomer’s Final White Collar

Matt Bomer recently filmed his last White Collar episode. He tweeted about it on Monday, thanking everyone as if they were family.

The show debuted in 2009 with a then little-known Bomer in the lead role of ex-con Neal Caffrey.

As a way of staying out of prison, Neal agrees to help the FBI catch other white collar criminals and works with an FBI agent played by Tim Dekay. Both Bomer and Dekay have appeared in all 86 episodes of the series which is having an abbreviated six-episode season six.

Bomer seems to have found that magic secret that most TV actors can’t find. He’s made the switch from TV to feature films in a relatively short amount of time, a lot like George Clooney did back in the 90’s.

Gay Big Brother 16

I’ve been following Big Brother 16 mainly because I’ve been watching this show since it started a long time ago. And I’m not even a huge fan of “reality” TV because I don’t think there is such a thing. They’re all staged. And all this gay-baiting this season on Big Brother 16 is really starting to make me wonder. But, it is entertaining. I have to admit that. I’ve written scenes like this in romance novels never once intending it to be gay-baiting…where straight guys and gay guys almost get intimate, but they don’t.

This link is about Frankie and Cody snuggling up together when Zach isn’t around. Frankie is openly gay. Cody and Zach are a couple of butch straight dudes who seem to have taken this unusual liking to dear little Frankie. Of course the more Frankie snuggles with these two hot looking straight guys the more people watch and the more attention they get. In a way, it’s part of the Big Brother charm…for lack of a better word.

Frankie has previously been seen massaging Cody’s buttocks on more than one occasion but footage from the show’s live feed over the weekend shows a more intimate bond.

They cuddle in bed throughout a long conversation with two female contestants and as they cuddle, Frankie calls Cody ‘the most beautiful person I’ve ever met – inside and out.’

Cody says they will have to hang out after the game ends and the two talk about how Frankie lives right around the corner from where Cody’s brother once lived in New York City.

Of course one thing should be mentioned. They only go as far as a cuddle or a pat on the bottom in a playful way. There’s nothing romantic happening so far, at least not from what I’ve seen when the show airs. I should also mention that I watch the show because of the game in general. It’s fascinating to watch all these strangers come together in the same house, blocked from all communication, try to win a half million dollars and remain sane at the same time.

You can read more here.

Side note: Cody, the straight one, has been an underwear model prior to this show.

Neil Patrick Harris’ Nude Selfie

Of course the headline to this link is overly exaggerated and I think most of us expect that crap by now from all online publications. They’ll tell you anything to get you to click a link. And this time it’s by baiting readers with Neil Patrick Harris doing a nude selfie, in partial make up.

The post-show selfie is what is getting the most attention because the star appears to be wearing nothing but fingernail polish and what is left of his make-up.

Here’s the link, but don’t get too excited. There’s no full frontal…or even an ass shot. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t care who poses nude or who takes a nude selfie, but I’d like to at least see a little ass if they’re saying that’s what they’re doing.

Here’s one comment:

So he shaved. Selfies are now as boring as mushy lipstick & runny mascara! Pffffft!

I think selfies have run their course, too. The rest of the comments run along these lines. There’s a reason why most photo shoots like this are done professionally. This is also a tough one for me for another reason. Last fall Neil Patrick Harris posed with his husband and kids in a pumpkin patch photo around Halloween in what looked to be the perfect gay family, not to mention the most blatant form of assimilation I’ve seen in ages. In the photo I linked to above he looks as if he’s tripping out. What kind of WTF-ery is that? You can’t be Cher and Marcia Brady at the same time. You wind up looking stupid.

Gay For You Big Brother 16; Bisexual R.J. Aguiar; 17 Gays Playing Straight; The Way We Almost Were by Ryan Field

Gay For You Big Brother 16

Every summer I post about the fact that I’ve been a huge fan of the TV show (and the game), Big Brother, and this year I saw something different happen on the most recent episode that I never expected to see…anywhere. There are two good looking male contestants getting to know each other. Zach Rance claims he’s straight. And Frankie Grande is gay. They’ve formed a friendship that not only shows them bonding, but hugging, laying in bed together, and fondling each other in a way that’s rarely seen with straight men and gay men.

Zach, the straight one, said softly to his gay friend: ‘Frankie, can you just like caress me.’

They then began to spoon.

Grande, the brother of singer Ariana Grande, and Rance are the season’s first big ‘showmance’ and have given themselves the moniker of ‘Zrankie.’

‘I’m not gay,’ Rance tells viewers. ‘But the bond Frankie and I have is so genuine and sincere that I truly feel that he is my boyfriend.’

I have always said…even in my books…the relationships and friendships between gay and straight men are often highly underestimated. I made this very clear in my m/m romance The Way We Almost Were. I have a hot straight friend, too. We don’t spoon and caress each other. But we really do connect in ways I often can’t connect with other gay men. It’s easier.

It should be interesting to see how this relationship ends up with Rance and Grande. On Big Brother no one is safe and the central theme of the game is all about how many lies you can tell and who you can stab in the back the most. It’s a game, first and foremost.

You can read more here. The comments are interesting, too.

Bisexual R.J. Aguiar

This is interesting for several reasons. One, it’s about a bisexual man and we don’t often hear much about them. And two, because R.J. Aguiar is another rising you tube star and they keep popping up more and more lately. Three, he’s adorable. Four, he’s tired of being labeled gay.

“Yes, I’m a bisexual male,” R.J. Aguiar says in a video published Monday. The 25-year-old is currently engaged to Will Shepherd, his fellow YouTuber and cofounder of the brand Not Adam and Steve. That relationship, combined with the couple’s online visibiliy, has led to a seemingly endless stream of questions about the validity of Aguiar’s orientation, he says.

I don’t post about this often, but I have mentioned the issues bisexual men face all the time. I personally don’t think it’s fair. You can try to explain bisexuality until you’re head is hanging sideways and most people still don’t get it.

There’s more here. There’s a video where Aguiar is trying to “set the record” straight…at least that’s what he’s hoping to do but I’m afraid it might fall on deaf ears with some.

17 Gays Playing Straight

I’ll admit that I’m often critical about the difficulties gay actors have getting straight roles in Hollywood, and I think that’s partly because it’s so hard for an openly gay author to cross into the mainstream with fiction. It’s like starting all over again and anything you’ve pubbed previously doesn’t count anymore. But I digress. Here’s a list of 17 gay actors who do play straight roles with success.

Here’s one:

10. Jonathan Bennett

This sexy actor is best known for his role as heartthrob Aaron Samuel in the iconic teen film “Mean Girls”. Sorry to say ladies but this guy just is not that interested in you. He is openly gay and has had a rumoured relationship with actor Matt Dallas.

Maybe I’m being a little too picky here, but I find the list accurate and yet slightly disappointing in some respects. If, and I really mean if without any insinuations, Tom Cruise were to hypothetically come out of the closet I have to wonder if he would ever get a leading straight role in the big feature film again. We’re making progress thanks to the 17 actors listed here, but I still think we have a long way to go.

You can view the entire list here.

The Way We Almost Were
by Ryan Field

Amazon Review (I tend to stay away from reviews because I think they are for readers and not for authors, and this is the very first time I’ve ever seen this one.)

Sometimes I read a book I like, I love or I’m passionate about. And sometimes a book just lets me speechless, so happy and satisfied, and fulfilled, that I loose my words. This book by Ryan Field is one of them. I don’t know what to say about the book if not that it is AMAZING. I read “A christmas Carl” by the same author and I loved it. But this book, “The way we almost were” is by far the best of Ryan Field’s books. Thi is a book about two men who met in college, and the love they have shared for each other over the years. It is also a book about the importance of living one’s life honestly and to the full.
