Colin Farrell Beat Up Bullies; Freddie Smith Apologizes; First Wives Club Sequel

Colin Farrell Beat Up Bullies

Colin Farrell is a strong supporter of the LGBT community partly because his own brother is gay. But from what I remember he has been a supporter for some time. I watched him play a bisexual in A Home at the End of the World at least a decade ago…a film a highly recommend if you haven’t seen it.

In any event, I’ve seen this all over the gay news:

Colin Farrell used to beat up bullies who attacked his gay brother, his sibling has revealed.

Eamon, the brother of the Hollywood star, said Colin acted as his gay brother’s ‘protector’ in the face of homophobia.

‘He acted the part of the big brother. I hate fighting. But he would do that for me,’ Eamon told the Irish Independent.

Now that’s a nice story. Nothing to complain about there. Take note, James Franco. You might learn something from Colin Farrell. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Farrell gay bait anyone, because real men don’t do that to get attention.

You can finished the article here.

Side note: Farrell plays a wonderful part in Saving Mr. Banks in the biopic of P.L. Travers, the woman who wrote Mary Poppins. There is strong evidence Travers was, indeed, a lesbian and that Mary Poppins may have been a lesbian, too.

Freddie Smith Apologizes

I remember posting about this a few months ago and this is the first follow up I’ve seen. Freddie Smith plays a gay character on a daytime soap and he was in an automobile accident in Ohio where his girlfriend was seriously injured.

On the day an episode aired showing his Days of Our Lives character discovering that his husband has slept with his ex-boyfriend, Smith was in an Ohio courtroom trying to avoid being sent to jail.

He succeeded.

A judge suspended Smith’s driver’s license for one year and ordered him to DUI school stemming from a car accident last October that left Smith’s now fiance seriously injured.

‘It was very selfish and I’m very sorry for doing it,’ Smith told 19 Action News after the sentencing. ‘Today was very nerve-racking and to hear all of the support from fans, friends and family has really helped me stay strong. I appreciate it.’

The rest is here.  There’s some interesting information about the gay character he plays. This show I don’t follow.

First Wives Club Sequel

Here’s an interesting article that claims because the three stars of the movie, The First Wives Club, were women they were treated in a significantly different way than if they had been men. Ultimately, this is the reason why we never saw a sequel to the film.

We were all women of a certain age, and everyone took a cut in salary to do it so the studio could make what it needed. We all took a smaller back end than usual and a much smaller front end. And we ended up doing incredibly well. The movie was hugely successful. It made a lot of money. We were on the cover of Time magazine. But two years later, when the studio came back with a sequel, they wanted to offer us exactly the same deal. We went back to ground zero. Had three men come in there, they would have upped their salaries without even thinking about it. But the fear of women’s movies is embedded in the culture.”

I read the book, The First Wives Club, and loved it. But to be honest I wasn’t a huge fan of the film simply because it came off as being so painfully cliche. I’ve also been known to get hives and stomach cramps watching any Bette Midler film for more than ten minutes.

The article is here.

As one person in the comments said:

Honestly, though I’m all about empowered women, I thought this movie sucked.

Clay Aiken Running For Office; Gay Teen Torture in Russia; Freddie Smith Car Accident

Clay Aiken Running For Office

I’ve posted about Clay Aiken, former American Idol contestant, running for office in North Carolina’s second district. But I haven’t posted any details…yet. It seems things are heating up, and a recent debate with his opponent, Renee Ellmers, shows that Aiken could be a formidable candidate at that. He’s not taking anything from anyone.
Here are a few small details:
Ellmers, chairwoman of the Republican Women’s Policy Committee, didn’t hold back on her rival’s claim to fame.

“It’s almost as if, as an entertainer, you think that means we can just go in with a song and dance and change the minds of our military leaders because you’re going to impress them so much,” Ellmers said to Aiken.

Aiken’s response,
according to CBS News: “The most embarrassing reality show right now is Congress.”

Ellmers also tied her Democratic rival to President Obama, making reference to the “Obama-Aiken” economy. Aiken called the charge “preposterous.”

“I have nothing to do with President Obama, and I can find several areas where I disagree with them,” he said.

Well done, Aiken. I hope we hear more from him soon. Frankly, I disagree with the President in several areas myself…but I never get political here on the blog. This time it’s an exception because an openly gay man is running for office. I find that newsworthy in itself. You don’t have to agree with me.

Gay Teen Torture in Russia

This is very disturbing. There’s a new HBO film out on how gay teens are allegedly lured and tortured in Russia. I hadn’t heard about it, but I’ll be doing a search. (Update: I watched it last night and was physically sick when I saw what these vigilante groups are doing to innocent gay people.)

They create profiles on social media, seduce young men into meeting them for a ‘date’, before they would be capture the victim and torture them on video.

The vigilante groups posted the horrific clips on the social networking site VK. Because of this, many of the men featured in the video were outed, forced to leave their jobs, and some committed suicide.

The anti-gay group is making claims about pedophilia and boasting about pride in torturing gays, and it’s one more reason to watch Russia very closely instead of taking this passive aggressive stand we’ve been taking for so long. Seriously. What’s happened in the US lately? Are we getting that passive we don’t care about these things anymore? (Update 2: There was one vigilante woman in the film I saw last night that I could have taken by the back of her ugly red head and dragged down the street until she begged for mercy…yes, that’s what you do to people like that.)

You can read the rest here. I missed the premiere of this film, but I’m hoping it’s on demand. The title is, Hunted: The War Against Gays in Russia. Also one more reason why I still do NOT regret the stand against the Russian Olympics I took last year when everyone was telling me I was so wrong. I think it’s time to instill a little fear in THEM.

Freddie Smith Car Accident

Actor, Freddie Smith, who plays a gay character on Days of Our Lives, Sonny Kiriakis, was recently in a car accident in Ohio. He was injured and his passenger is in critical condition. From the way it sounds, the circumstances surrounding the accident don’t sound good for him.

Smith’s Kiriakis is one of the highest-profile gay characters in daytime television in the US. His character married longtime love Will Horton (played by Guy Wilson) earlier this year in a three-part episode of the show.

‘I just really love this storyline from the bottom of my heart,’ the actor told Gay Star News last year. ‘It’s nice to go to work every day and have such a positive impact.’

You can read more here about it. Another soap star who played a highly popular gay character on TV is also in Ohio for the next few weeks shooting a new film right now…a romance. I get these updates from my secret Amish source in Charm, Ohio through e-mail exchange, the one who wrote a post here a while back. Since that first e-mail exchange between us we’ve remained very good friends to this day. Hard to believe that was over two years ago, and we’ve never actually met in person. It’s all about discretion and privacy sometimes. I would do anything for that guy. I’d even go to Russia and pull a bigot down the street by the back of her ugly red head.

Gay on Daytime TV; Fashion Supports Russian Gays; Pat Robertson Likes Gay Friends; Obama’s Birth Certificate

Gay on Daytime TV

Guy Wilson played a gay part on Days of Our Lives and he’s saying that he felt privileged to do it. He also says the gay storyline was true, true love.

‘When we filmed that episode and the days leading up to that, with each day it became increasingly powerful for us,’ Wilson told Gay Star News at the recent GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles where the show was named outstanding daytime drama.

‘The actual day of filming it, there was no acting. We didn’t have to act,’ he said. ‘It was simultaneously one of the most powerful moments I’ve had as a performer or otherwise and also one of the most fluid moments I’ve had as an actor.’

I normally would get a little irritated by something like this. It almost sounds as if it’s shocking to think that gay men can share that kind of love. But I’m glad he gets it. And I’m even happier because of the stigma that’s always been attached to being gay I actually think this is a step in the right direction, and I hope moving toward a time when we’ll never feel the need to single out things like this again because they are gay related.

You can read more here. So far, no one has bothered to comment on this.

Fashion Supports Russian Gays

This is probably one of the most important pieces I’ve read all week. Fashion icons and celebrities are banning together to support the injustices that have been happening to LGBTI people in Russia.

The Proud To Protest project was the brainchild of English fashion designer Gareth Pugh and SHOWstudio photographer Nick Knight.

The Olympics are over, Johnny Weir got his paycheck, and the mainstream media has moved on to other topics that will increase readership and ratings. But the fight for equality is still ongoing in Russia, and LGBTI people there are dealing with things those of us here in the US can’t even imagine on our worst day.

Pat Robertson Likes Gay Friends

It’s often difficult to parse things like this, so I’m not even going to try. Anti-gay US televangelist, Pat Robertson, who has clearly stated being gay is a sin also thinks it’s okay to keep gay friends.

‘You don’t turn the light out just because you disagree with somebody,’ Robertson said on Wednesday during a broadcast of his show The 700 Club.

‘The Lord’s not going to punish you for having homosexuals as your friends. But I do think that when you read the Bible very carefully, homosexuality is condemned.’

Actually, I think we all should thank Pat for being so kind. And tell him we feel the same way. I would encourage all of my gay friends to embrace as many ill-informed Christians that think being gay is a sin as they can. Pat is right. You don’t turn the light out just because you disagree with somebody. And, no one is going to stop inviting you to cool dinner parties for having right wing Christian friends. But I do think that when you read the Bible very carefully you’ll find that there are so many different ways you can interpret it the possibilities are endless.

But that’s not all Pat said.

‘There are some very, very creative homosexual people,’ Robertson said. ‘They’re in the fashion industry, they’re in design, they’re in various types of creative arts.

And you would almost need to leave the world not to associate with folks like that.’

I guess no one told him about Michael Sam, you know, the professional football player. Or the guys I posted about last weekend who belong to a gym in New York that focuses only on boxing.

Obama’s Birth Certificate

I thought all this had died down after it was discovered that the President’s biography on one of his books stated that he was born in Africa. I really did think that was the end of it. After some debate, literary agent Miriam Goderich of Dystel & Goderich who still represent the President stated that she screwed up big time and she was the one who actually wrote the President’s bio for him back then. Aside from the fact that this was a HUGE mistake on her part even if she was young and painfully dumb, she admitted this openly and everything simmered down again. Or at least I thought it had.

According to a report issued by the Associate Press, an Alabama Supreme Court judge stated that Barack Obama should have to prove that he was born in the United States, and that he was eligible to be on the state ballot in 2012.

You can read more here. I really don’t know how accurate this is, so don’t take it to heart completely. I couldn’t find anything else with a simple search and I’m too lazy to go to snopes right now. I just thought it was interesting that it’s still being discussed after all this time, and interesting only in a general sense.

I find it all just too unbelievable, especially in this day an age when privacy is almost impossible and no one can seem to hide anything. One of the reasons why some really great people don’t run for President is because they don’t want this kind of scrutiny in their lives. You really do have to be above reproach, and even then they’ll make things up about you.
