Colton Haynes HRC Visibility Award Video Speech

I know this video of Colton Haynes has already made the rounds on social media all week, but I’m posting it anyway because I like to revisit these things sometimes. Or maybe, when I end this blog someday (and all blogs do come to an end eventually) someone younger who is struggling with coming out will watch it and gain something from it.

And I think Haynes really means what he says…and feels it, too. He’s also more than just a pretty face. There are only a handful of celebrities out there who work social media well, and he’s one of them.

With that said, here’s the speech that Colton Haynes made when he accepted the HRC award last week. I would imagine this is safe to share because I shared it directly from Youtube.

You can check it out on Youtube, here.

Dating A Deaf Gay Man

Even though I think most of the people I know couldn’t care less about whether someone is deaf or not, this is a nice article, written by a nice guy, that has a lighter tone…

Meet Dickie Hearts. He’s a Los Angeles-based filmmaker, an avid hiker, biker and weight-lifter, and a total comic book/super hero geek. Oh, and he’s also deaf.
“I face a lot of interesting challenges,” he tells Queerty in an exclusive interview. “At times, I do feel invisible, which can be frustrating. At the same time, it drives me more and gives me a stronger voice (or hands) as an actor-filmmaker.”

You can read more here. It’s actually an interview where Hearts answers a series of questions that might provide you with information you didn’t know. I usually learn something from these things.  There’s also a video of a short film he made titled, Passengers, for which he won an award.

Side note: I once dated a deaf guy who looked like a younger version of Sylvester Stallone. I didn’t have any problems at all communicating with him.

What Stories Do Constitute Gay News?

Whenever I read the comments that follow any story in any gay press (not just this one I’m linking to), I usually find a few that complain about the fact that the story isn’t what they consider gay news. Personally, I don’t know what constitutes gay news anymore than the people writing at gay presses. I also understand that there has to be a certain amount of clickbait, otherwise no one will check out the web site and search engines won’t even pick it up. But since so many people out there think they do know what is considered gay news, this article asks them to comment about it in the comment section.

Despite the increasingly concerned advice of friends and therapists, we actually do read the comments here at Queerty. (Yes, we drink.) And while there’s never any shortage of food for thought or ammunition for our ever-sagging self-esteem, there is one comment that we see all the time, and frankly, we want to know why.

You can check that out here, and don’t miss the responses in the comment section. As of right now, there are 37.

I think if I had to add anything to these comments as a reader, about what constitutes gay news, I’d have to say that I’ve had about enough of James Franco and Nick Jonas to last me a lifetime. And I would also like to see more reporting on politics that’s not so subjective. A little objectivity never hurt anyone, because the gay community is far more diverse than most people would imagine.

But I’m not complaining. I can still remember a time when it was virtually impossible to link to any gay news sites online anywhere. I’m thankful we have what we have now.
