“Call Me By Your Name” and Predatory Relationships

There’s been so much aggressive publicity with this film, Call Me By Your Name, that most people fail to see the obvious. I also think that because it happens to a young gay man instead of a young girl, people somehow find this kind of thing less important…or less shocking.

In any event, here’s another commentary I read recently about Call Me By Your Name. It’s one of the best things I’ve read so far about this film and it actually calls it for what it truly is in a brilliant, articulate way.

Call Me By Your Name is the film adaption of a novel depicting romance between two men in 1980s Italian bourgeois society. Now, allow me to call it as it is: the romance is not between two adults, but between a 17-year-old boy and a 24-year-old man. It is not a romance, then, but a perverse romanticization of what in reality would be a predatory relationship.

By filtering the subject matter of the film through a rose-tinted lens, commentators and critics have become complicit in justifying a practice that not only plagues the film industry, but also affects relationships between gay men generally.

They’re Calling Doug Jones’ Gay Son “Zaddy”

Ever since Doug Jones beat Roy Moore in Alabama, Jones’ openly gay son, Carson, has been getting a great deal of attention from admirers. He recently did an interview, and commented.

Honestly, everyone has been surprisingly tame. No dick pics or anything. Lots of marriage proposals but also a lot of really amazing supportive messages. I definitely get a lot of “ZADDY” comments. I honestly had no idea what that meant and had to look it up. And now my close friends are trolling my Instagram and commenting “ZADDY” everywhere.

Four Way Brazilian Gay Kiss

This is exactly what it sounds like.

We have no idea what’s happening here, but someone got a three-way kiss that becomes a four-way kiss between sexy Brazilians on video. So obviously, we had to share with you because that is our duty as queer journalists. The video had more than one million views at press time.

Kansas High School Ends Tradition Because of Rainbow Flag

Up until recently, a high school in Kansas allowed seniors to paint their parking stalls. I would assume as an expression of creativity and free speech. One openly gay senior decided to paint his with the rainbow flag, and guess what happened.

Here’s the rest. The kid seems to be taking it in his stride, and he even mentions that someone else painted the Trump slogan, “Let’s Make America Great Again.” He didn’t complain. This kid who painted the rainbow believes everyone has a right to express themselves.
