Provincetown Winter Population Dwindling

Provincetown, MA is a lot like Fire Island in NY or Wilton Manors in FL. It’s a gay enclave for the LGBT community that started out many years ago as a small town just like any other.  I think it was a fishing village. Even though Tony and I used to go there…for fifteen years in a row…in the summer, the fall, and for New Year’s Eve, I never got much history while I was there.

In my lifetime I’ve always known it as a gay enclave where the majority come from Boston, and other places in NE like Providence, and the rest from all over the US. On the morning of 911 two guys who were staying at the same guest house where we were staying were on their way to pick up a flight in Boston to LA. I never did find out what happened to them.

But I digress. Here’s a NYT piece about how Provincetown is changing. In this case they’re talking about how the winter population (or year round) is thinning out.

“It’s like a Potemkin village,” Stephen Borkowski, 61, a freelance art historian and year-round resident, said the other day as he strolled down the middle of a deserted Commercial Street, where many shops were closed for the season. “There are the store facades and about five people.”
Provincetown, like many summer havens, is caught in a vicious cycle of economic and demographic change, with a widening divide between the haves and the have-nots that is threatening its future. The long-running invasion by second-home owners and investors, who now own 71 percent of the homes here, has jacked up the price of real estate. One 418-square-foot home, albeit with 30 feet of mesmerizing waterfront, is going for nearly $1.6 million.

I remember when Provincetown was still fairly affordable, and then people started buying up property and turning casual guest houses into five star bed and breakfasts, or tasteful seasonal homes. It’s really very nice and I’m not sure I understand why they want to change something that seems to work for the majority of people who have invested there.

The rest of the article talks about how they plan to battle this. It’s interesting because they discuss living in a society without children, almost as if there’s something wrong with that. One of the reasons I like P’town is because there aren’t that many children running loose.

Bette Midler’s Hate Tweet on George Bush

I think everyone’s heard about the way Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner in Miss Universe the other night. It was an unfortunate situation for everyone. When they took that crown from her head and I saw her expression it gutted me. These women work so hard to get there.

However, the gay presses seem to be thrilled…and I mean thrilled to the point of getting a thrill up their legs…that good old Bette Midler weighed in with a tweet. Eight years later and she’s still knocking George Bush with an unspoken kind of hate.

Wrong crowned last night. For 2 minutes. Remember when that happened with our President in 2000 & we had to keep him 8 years?

It’s really not the most intelligent comparison but I won’t go into detail about that.

I remember that morning after the general election in 2000. I didn’t vote for Bush and the headline in my morning paper read Gore had won. I’d voted for Gore and figured fine and let it go…until I found out later that day things were different. At the time I wasn’t thrilled.

But I’m not sitting around tossing bad tweets toward George Bush anymore. That was 15 years ago and a lot has changed everywhere, especially for gay people. Since bush left office not one single politician helped pass legal same sex marriage, including President Obama and Hillary Clinton. It was fought state by state and the courts made those changes.

Pharma-Bro Conspiracy

The guy who has been dubbed Pharma-bro, Martin Shkreli, who raised drug prices and was recently arrested by the FBI is talking conspiracy theory now.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Shkreli insisted that the FBI was going after him because back in August he jacked up the price of Daraprim, a drug used by some HIV patients, by more than 5,000 percent overnight, going from $13.50 to $750 per tablet.

“‘Trying to find anything we could to stop him,’ was the attitude of the government,” Shkreli snarled. “Beating the person up and then trying to find the merits to make up for it — I would have hoped the government wouldn’t take that kind of approach.”

He also claimed that he was being punished for his snarky Twitter account and “because of a social experiment and teasing people over the Internet.”
