Seminary and Huge Gay Scandal
If you read my newest book, Unabated, (see links below) you’ll see that I get into the topic of gays and the Catholic Church, in fiction. I can’t say how I do that, because that would be a spoiler, but I do get into this subject to a certain extent. I don’t think I did it in a negative way either…or a hateful way.
With that said, here’s another real life scandal about gays and the Catholic Church.
The announcement of Connolly’s sudden departure comes amidst rumors of an underground gay subculture happening in the seminary. According to The Irish Catholic, an anonymous source told the paper that “seven seminarians and two staff members” have been “involved in inappropriate behavior of a homosexual nature.”
My only comment is that if you’re gay and you’ve been around gay culture long enough, this is nothing new. The unfortunate thing about it is that there’s still so much shame attached to being gay within the Catholic Church. And that’s painful to see. Someone should tell them.
Bad Advice From Gay Friends
On a much lighter note, I’m always advising people never to take publishing advice, and I think this next article falls into the same category, about not taking advice from friends.
A friend can be a true savior in times of need, offering a fresh perspective on any one of life’s seemingly insurmountable problems. You know they have your best interests at heart, so you can trust that they’re giving you sound advice.
That is, until they tell you the best way to get over an ex is to pop a xanny bar, wash it down with a fifth of tequila and call him to get some closure.

Trailer For Looking Movie
I sometimes wonder why it takes so long for these things to transpire. It seems as if it’s been ages already since I watched Looking on HBO, and to be honest I’ve moved on. I loved the show. I posted about that here many times. I hated to see it canceled. I thought it represented a segment of gay men very well.
But since that time I’ve dropped my premium cable channels, I’ve started streaming instead, and the world is, indeed, a very different place. I know many people who don’t even deal with cable TV anymore. So I’m not going to run to watch the Looking movie on HBO. As much as I would love to do that, I’m not signing on again to HBO to pay top dollar for one TV show and thousands of bad, old movies.
In any event, for those of you who disagree with me, there’s this.
Good news for fans of the woefully short-lived HBO series Looking. Today, the official trailer for the full-length feature follow-up has been released, and it finds Patrick (Jonathan Groff) returning to San Francisco to find closure and resolution in his relationships with Richie (Raúl Castillo) and Kevin (Russell Tovey), but instead chaffing up against a host of new challenges, old resentments, and boilerplate advice on letting go (i.e, “Sometimes you have to leave everything behind so you can move forward.”)
As I said, I loved this show for many reasons. And I’ll watch the movie if it goes to Netflix…or if I can get it On Demand. But I really wish that some of these TV shows would take into consideration the concept of timing. Seriously. I think the show started well over two years ago. This is more like a Looking reunion than a finale.
