Nick Jonas On Gay Baiting and Sexuality

Here’s yet another clickbait article about Nick Jonas.

Later in the interview, he touches upon the criticism he’s faced for his support of the LGBTQ community and accusations of gay-baiting. “I’m totally aware of my intentions in and any and all of my attempts to be an ally to the gay community,” he says. “Starting in theatre growing into the performer I am today, I’ve made so many great friends belonging to the LGBT community . The positive impact is 10 times more important that the negative comments.”

You can read more here. I’m not slamming Jonas, but I’m not sure about his take on the positive impact, at least not according the to comments with this article.  

“American Male” Short Film About Hyper-masculinity

There’s a new short film out titled, American Male, and it gets into the topic of how gay men sometimes overcompensate to appear masculine. Gay men do this all the time, and sometimes they aren’t even aware they are doing it. And those who are in the closet make it a full time hobby. I have seen it, and at times done it, myself. I’ve even included this with characters in my books.

American Male tells the story of a college student who feels the urgent need to prove his masculinity to both himself and his fraternity brothers. In the process, however, he is forced to suppress his own sexual desires, and bury the parts of his personality that might be seen as too “feminine.”

Here’s a link to the rest, and there’s a trailer. It mentions how women in school are supposed to hold their books up to their chests and men are supposed to hold them at their sides…the butch, manly way. I think most gay men came across that one growing up.

I’ll be watching this one.

Why Gay Men Care About Youth

Here’s an article that talks about the obsession some gay men have with youth. They claim it’s a stereotype, as if this whole concept only applies to gay men. But I’m not so sure about that. I think we’re all living in a youth culture, not just gay men. And many people do care about looking young.

Now, silver fox/psychotherapist Matthew Dempsey says he has the answer as to why so many gay men remain so fixated on staying youthful. He says that it all boils down to money and consumerism and the way companies market their products to younger people who are generally more likely to throw their cash away on frivolous things.

Admittedly, I’m as guilty as anyone else when it comes to holding on to that last ounce of youth. I haven’t had pizza or donuts in years. I have products with Argireline in my bathroom.  But I don’t think this is just about gay men, at least not anymore, and if you read the comments with this one most people seem to agree with me.
