President Biden Signs Gay Marriage Law
I remember when Tony and I got married in 2014. Even though we’ve been together since 1992, and we have POA and all our legal papers in order, we wanted the protections of legal marriage just like the straights have.
So we drove up to Vermont on a snowy cold January weekend to be part of a documentary about gay marriage…The State of Marriage…and we were married by Vermont supreme court justice, Beth Robinson. Robinson was one of the people who started civil unions and gay marriage in Vermont. So it wasn’t by accident that we went there. Being part of the documentary was exciting, too.
After we were married, I realized on the long drive home that we were legally married in New York State and New Jersey, but when we crossed into Pennsylvania were not legally married anymore. But we suspected that would change. A judge in PA ruled that bans on same-sex marriage were unconstitutional and within a few weeks same-sex marriage was legal in PA. And that same year SCOTUS ruled that gay marriage was legal on a federal level.
It took a long time, and it had to go state by state, but we finally gained the same rights that straights have with regard to marriage. However, with the recent SCOTUS ruling on abortion, lawmakers decided to codify same sex marriage just in case.
And President Biden just signed it into law. I do recall that Biden was always for legalized same sex marriage.
“This law and the love it defends strike a blow against hate in all its forms,” Biden said on the South Lawn of the White House. “And that’s why this law matters to every single American.”
“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”
