Colorado Gay Club Shooter Charged with Hate Crimes

Here’s a follow up story about the mass shooting in a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs. At the time the story broke, the police there still hadn’t determined if this was a hate crime or not. 

The suspect, Anderson Lee Aldrich, is accused of killing five people and injuring 17 other people by shooting them with an AR-15 rifle. The suspect went on this shooting spree during the celebration of a drag queen’s birthday. All those people were there just to have fun, never suspecting it would turn out to be their worst nightmare. 

The district attorney there hadn’t actually detailed the crimes committed, but he did state that there were many counts of “biased motivated crimes.” He also stated that murder charges have the “harshest” penalties. So it sounds as though they are being careful as to how they charge Aldrich. However, as far as I know he was charged with hate crimes. 

According to this article, Aldrich has a history. About a year ago he was arrested for allegedly making a bomb threat, and they had to evacuate 10 homes. It goes into more detail, here.
