Colorado Gay Club Shooting and Hate Crimes

We’ve all been waiting patiently to hear more about the shooter, Anderson Lee Aldrich, and how he’s going to be charged with the mass shooting at a gay club in Colorado Springs, CO. So far the police have been investigating the crime and they haven’t said much.

Everyone wants to know what motivated Aldrich to do what he did. People are angry and they want answers. The director at the Transgender Center of the Rockies, April Owen, believes this was a hate crime. She also believes it would be a disservice if it wasn’t treated as a hate crime.

It get’s a little more complicated, though. According to Deputy District Attorney, Bilal Aziz, a suspect’s bias plays a huge part in determining if it was a hate crime or not.

“If part of the motivation is a bias motivation, then we still have a viable charge,” he said.

Here’s the rest. They go into a lot more detail.  I never realized how complicated and involved it is to determine whether something is a hate crime or not. I do think that storming into a crowded gay bar and shooting people at random in the most vicious way should qualify as hate. But the law can be tricky at times.
