You Don’t See Two Men Dancing Together Anywhere

This is more of an observation than a commentary. I’ve been following Dancing with the Stars this year because Trevor Donovan has been a contestant. And I’ve watched him grow and continue to get better as each week passes. However, I would never watch DWTS if it weren’t for Trevor.

It’s always been a straight show. It took 30 seasons for DWTS to actually pair a gay couple. That’s right and it took 336 heterosexual pairings to reach that point.

I’m linking to an article that goes into more depth about the way DWTS in the US ignores gay couples. In fact, it’s taken years for DWTS to even consider a same sex couple. And they aren’t the only ones ignoring gay men. It happens all the time in multiple places and we have grown so used to that we often don’t even notice.

“We’ve discussed [such] pairings in the past,” one producer, Conrad Green, told NBC News in 2011. “But the traditional role in ballroom [dancing] is for men to have a female partner, so that’s what we’ll do.”

I remember the first time I slow danced with a man in a gay bar. At the time it felt so good, and yet so dangerous. And I’d like to know who decided that ballroom dancing is just for straight couples.

A Different Kind of Southern Love Story

What readers are saying about “Uncertainty”

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”
