Provincetown Has One of the Best Gay Bars in America, Ryan Field Books

Provincetown Has One of the Best Gay Bars in America

For years, between 1992 and 2007, Tony and I had a set pattern. We would spend the week of Labor Day in Provincetown, MA, then we would return for Halloween weekend, and after that we would return for Christmas week and spend New Year’s Eve there. We were there for Y2K. And even though the drive to Provincetown from New Hope took about 8 hours, we loved every minute of it. Provincetown is like going to gay heaven. Aside from a few straights, it’s gay everywhere you go.

With that said, one of the things we almost always did was tea dance at a bar called the Boatslip, which is what this article is about. According to Esquire Magazine, The Boatslip made the list as one of the best gay bars in America. And I’m not surprised.

However, along with the Boatslip in Provincetown there were several other gay bars we loved. One was the Atlantic House and the other was The Crown and Anchor. I’m sure there are newer gay bars as well that we don’t know about because we now live in Palm Springs, CA full time. And when you have two dogs you tend to not travel as much. But that’s the good thing about Provincetown. It’s very dog friendly and we always brought the dogs when we lived in New Hope.

Here’s a link to more about the Boatslip. They refer to it as “queer magic” and it’s nice for me to see that it’s still around and thriving 30 years later.

There is a place here in California called Bishop, and there is a sign on Rt 6 that reads, “Provincetown MA 3205 miles.” Provincetown is pretty much known all over the world.

A Different Kind of Southern Love Story

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”
