New York City Will Destroy Nude Sun-bathing Spot and Gay Sanctuary, Ryan Field Books

New York City Will Destroy Nude Sun-bathing Spot and Gay Sanctuary

I hate to see this happen.

NYC is planning to flatten and old hospital in Queens to build a public park. The only problem is that the old hospital shielded the nude gay sunbathers on the beach. Riis is a clothing optional beach, and always has been. Since the 1960s it’s been a queer haven for gay men and many in the LGBTQIA community, including women. I’m sure there are straight men, too. I don’t want to leave anyone out.

The old hospital they want to rip down has been empty since 1998. And people who love the beach are decorating the old hospital with Pride flags and other queer things because it is rich with local gay history.

It sounds as if all they want is a promise that this beach will always been there for the queer community. And I wish them luck with that. When the straights come in and push their agenda of gentrification, they always win…even those straights who claim to be allies.  There was a gay bar in New Hope, PA, where Tony and I lived most of our lives called The Raven, and the straights came into town and tore down The Raven for a parking lot. The Raven had been in that spot for at least 45 years and it, too, served as an LGBTQIA enclave for everyone. And the parking lot they put in serves a straight establishment miles away.

Here’s the rest of the story. I hope these folks win the battle this time.

What readers are saying about “Uncertainty”

Amazon

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”
