Sam Williams Son of Hank Williams and His Gay Identity, Ryan Field Books

Sam Williams Son of Hank Williams and His Gay Identity

With all that’s going on now regarding the Paul Pelosi incident, here’s a nice story about Sam Williams and his own gay identity. The Paul Pelosi thing is really bothering me because our alleged allies are once again stabbing us in the back. They seem to think it’s inconceivable that Paul Pelosi might be gay. They are attaching shame to it and that’s totally wrong. It shouldn’t matter one way or the other if Pelosi is gay or not. What really matters here to me if Pelosi is gay is that the man spent his entire life in the closet. And then again, it could all be hype and Paul Pelosi isn’t gay at all.

But I digress. Here’s a more positive story about the son of country star, Hank Williams. I’m sure the Pelosi story will just die down and disappear. The mainstream media, although they praise us during Pride month, usually goes silent with stories like this.

Sam Williams not only came out of the closet, but he plans to incorporate references to his sexuality in a new video. This is big because typically, the music industry doesn’t celebrate anything gay. They still seem to shy away from it after all there years. That’s probably why Ricky Martin remained in the closet all those years.  That’s why when I wrote my book titled, When a Man Loves a Man, as a statement regarding the old country song, When a Man Loves a Woman. I know there are one or two gay performers who’ve come out, but there should be more.

Here’s a link the entire article. It’s free to read and you’ll see a nice photo of Williams.

A Wonderful Positive Review for Billy Eichner's "Bros," Ryan Field Books

A Wonderful Positive Review for Billy Eichner’s “Bros”

In the past, dating back to films like The Boys in the Band, straight actors would almost always play gayface. In the film, Philadelphia, that was released in the 90s, Tom Hanks played gayface and he did a wonderful job. However, Tom Hanks recently made a statement that he would not play gayface nowadays because that would be wrong. It would be cultural appropriation. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should be doing it.

In the past it was necessary for straight actors to play gay because no one was willing to come out in public that way. Gay men were shamed and criminalized so straight actors bravely took on gay roles. I know when I started getting published I questioned whether or not I should use a pen name. I decided to keep it real. But over the years I have seen sleazy crooked women authors writing a strange brand of gay romance lie and cheat and fake who they are. One even hired a gay man to go to book events and he pretended to be her. At the time, I didn’t know much about this. She would often send me personal messages with her fake persona and I would believe her. I really thought she was a gay man. I was stunned when news broke in the book world that she was lying all that time. Another fake gay romance author was caught plagiarizing straight romance. She would take the straight romance and use all gay characters. Oh, I’ve seen it all with those crooked fake women. They disgust me.

But fast forward to the 2000s. We had films like Brokeback Mountain, written by a straight white woman with two straight white actors playing the leads. At that time, gay  men had advanced enough to the point where we didn’t need straights playing gay anymore. I remember being livid about the movie, and about that book. I had arguments with friends over it. How dare they steal my gay culture and spin it with their straight voices. How dare they take away the voices of millions of gay writers and actors.

But they did it anyway, and they are still doing it. Straight queer-baiting Harry Styles is playing gayface in The Policeman, and straight Bradley Cooper is playing gayface in the life story of Leonard Bernstein. And there will probably be more in the future. So when a film like Bros comes along I can’t wait to celebrate it and shout out about it. Finally, a film with gay content, written by a gay author, starring openly gay actors. This is the way it should be with gay content now. The entire world should be celebrating openly gay artists of all mediums. Straight women should NOT be writing gay content for us. They should be on their chubby little straight knees apologizing for doing that by now.

But they aren’t. They are still stealing our culture. And I don’t see an end to this kind of cultural appropriation in the near future. As long as we support these straight people who are profiting from our culture, it won’t end. That’s why I’m sharing a link to this review of Bros. And this is one of the best reviews I’ve seen so far. And they use a few of my favorite words, such as ribald.

When Our Gay "Allies" Brag and Boast About Going to Homophobic Countries that Criminalize Us, Ryan Field Books

When Our Gay “Allies” Brag and Boast About Going to Homophobic Countries that Criminalize Us

There are many frustrating things I could talk about with regard to our alleged gay “allies,” but I’ll just focus on this one issue for now. It’s something that really bothers me, and if you’re gay it should bother you, too.

I follow this one celebrity on Facebook and she’s always claimed to be a gay ally. She seems like a nice person. She’s always friendly. However, she is a classic example of how straight white people become so steeped in their own privilege they don’t even realize when they are insulting us. Not a clue.

This alleged gay ally recently posted about her upcoming trip to a country in Africa that is so anti-gay they not only criminalize us, the punishment for gay sex is life imprisonment. And this celebrity brags and boasts about this being the African trip of a lifetime, and how much she’s looking forward to going to this hateful homophobic country. She even started hocking other people to join her on this trip.

She’s also performing on this trip, which means she’s either getting paid or she’s going to Africa for free. But that’s not my point here. My main point is that here is someone who claims to be a gay ally and she slaps us in the face by bragging about a homophobic country. And that hurts, and it segregates us from straight people. I realize that it’s her straight white privilege that keeps her from knowing about countries like this. Why should she worry? No one is going to throw her in jail for kissing her husband. She’s never had to worry about things like that. Yet it still hurts.

In any event, she should know that this country is homophobic. All straight people who claim to be gay allies should know about what is going on with LGBTQIA people all over the world. Africa is not the only place were gay people are criminalized. There are many more throughout the entire Middle East.

Here is a link that will show you 70 homophobic countries in the world. And if you claim to be a gay ally, you really should read it.

Homophobic Dad In Palm Beach Florida Doesn't Want Rainbow Flags in School, Russia Will Ban LGBTQ "Propaganda" with Adults Now, Ryan Field Books

Homophobic Dad In Palm Beach Florida Doesn’t Want Rainbow Flags in School

Well, it didn’t take long for the don’t say gay bill in Florida to kick in.

The father of a child in a Palm Beach school is suing Palm Beach County because a teacher allegedly  put up rainbow flags and started talking about LGBTQ issues. And Palm Beach County always seemed more liberal to me. But I could be wrong about that.

The homophobic father and son claim to be orthodox Christians who think that anything gay as a sin.

Here’s the rest. It gets a lot more complicated. But the gist of the story  revolves around homophobia, once again.

These straights just don’t understand that being gay is not just about sex and sexuality. We have an entire culture and a long history. Sadly, a good deal of our history is about shame and homophobia.

Russia Will Ban LGBTQ “Propaganda” with Adults Now

The Florida don’t say gay bill seems to be a clone of the Russian gay propaganda law. Both state that anything LGBTQ cannot be said around kids. It could be G-rated and perfectly clean. But these laws criminalize us if we even dare to mention anything LGBTQ.

And now Russia is allegedly planning to expand this gay propaganda law to include adults.

This part I found interesting. Russian officials claim that anything or anyone going against “Traditional Family Values,” is the same as pornography, violence, or promoting religious tensions. And it’s absolutely ridiculous.

This extension of the gay propaganda law also involves the censorship of books.

You can read more, here. This is much bigger than it appears to be. And it’s too reminiscent of what happened with World War 2.  Hitler put us in concentration camps and murdered us. And when the war was over the straights didn’t even count us among Hitler’s war crimes because being gay was still illegal in Germany. This how the Pink Triangle became a symbol for us.

British Foreign Secretary Suggests Gay World Cup Fans to Bow Down To Homophobic Qatar; Ryan Field Books

British Foreign Secretary Suggests Gay World Cup Fans to Bow Down To Homophobic Qatar

Once again we see an incident where straight privilege is so strong they guy doesn’t even understand what’s happening to gay people here. In short, the World Cup is being held this year in one of the most homophobic countries on this planet. Qatar criminalized all gay “activity.” And we all know what that means.

And now the British Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, made some not so clever remarks about gay fans who are going to Qatar. His exact words were not “bow down,” but basically that’s what he is suggesting gay fans do. He wants gay fans to “compromise” and be “respectful” to this awful homophobic nation of Qatar.

Qatar is another once of those homophobic Islam countries. And cleverly wants gay fans to consider the different culture of Qatar. Well, no. He can call it whatever he wants, but if they are going to criminalize gay people, we’re going to call them out for the hateful people that they are. Keep this in mind: you have never seen a gay person go after a Muslim. Not once. And also keep in mind that there are gay Muslims who live in fear and shame every day of their lives. I feel so sorry for them.

Downing Street made it very clear that what Cleverly said was wrong. And he’s facing more backlash for his hooded comments.

You can read more about it, here.  I actually wonder if he even knows and understands what happened here.

LGBTQ Abuse Continues in Qatar In Spite of World Cup Event, Gay Cuban Couples Can Now Marry, Ryan Field Books

LGBTQ Abuse Continues in Qatar In Spite of World Cup Event

I’ve posted about the abuse and homophobia in Qatar earlier this month, and now it’s making news again. This time is because Preventive Security forces in Qatar are now arresting LGBTQ people in public places at random.

Human Rights Watch has been documenting what’s been happening and so far they have at least 6 cases of LGBTQ abuse and Qatar is forcing conversion therapy on some.

It’s really very disturbing. You can read it all, here.  I can’t believe they will still hold the World Cup there. That’s so wrong.

Gay Cuban Couples Can Now Marry

On a much lighter note, under a brand new law, gay Cuban couples will now be allowed to marry just like straight Cuban couples.

You see, Cuba has a new family code that is now allowing gay marriage and even surrogate mothers. And the public voted on this, too. Cuba is now the 9th country in Latin America to legalize same sex marriage.

Here’s more. It’s hard to believe that some members of the LGBTQ community were against voting “yes” for these changes because they don’t believe they need a piece of paper to validate their relationships. And how stupid is that? It’s more than a piece of paper, you ding dongs. It makes us equal with straight people, not to mention the benefits of being a married couple in the legal sense.

"My Policeman" the Movie and Cultural Appropriation, Ryan Field Books

“My Policeman” the Movie and Cultural Appropriation

First of all, for those who don’t know, here’s a good definition of Cultural Appropriation. It’s short and it’s sweet.

Cultural appropriation takes place when members of a majority group adopt cultural elements of a minority group.

This could include any small marginalized group of people. Years ago those with straight white privilege did this to Native Americans, and even Asian people. And NO ONE is more guilty of cultural appropriation than the movie industry. They continue to do it to gay men time and again. It’s also very prevalent in the book industry. As an openly gay author I’ve faced it all my life, on a firsthand basis.

Not everyone does it. Some are too smart now. Recently, the wonderful Tom Hanks made a statement saying he’d never play gayface again.

With that said, once you know what it means, it doesn’t take much to spot cultural appropriation. In this case it’s a movie geared toward a mainstream audience, with straight actors playing gayface.

This particular article asks the question “is gay sex still taboo?” And I’m not even getting into that. I’m more concerned that is doesn’t question anything about the appropriation happening. The author completely ignores it. They even compare The Policeman to Billy Eichner’s Bros and that’s so blatantly unfair. Billy Eichner’s Bros was authentic gay content written and acted by gay men. It was not a majority group stealing gay culture, once again.

I know many of you think “it’s only acting.” But the world has changed, openly gay men have voices now, and this goes much deeper. For one thing, thousands of openly gay actors missed getting the part for The Policeman.

Here’s more. The article doesn’t talk about cultural appropriation, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Let's All Say Gay: Op-Ed Piece from the NYT, Ryan Field Books

Let’s All Say Gay: Op-Ed Piece from the NYT

Here is an opinion piece from the NYT that talks about using words like queer instead of gay, and how language and communication have changed over the years.

In fact, they discuss how the word gay is rarely used anymore. They also mention how the mainstream media now tends to avoid the word Lesbian. I tend to do that, too. I’ll just refer to lesbians as queer women.

You can read it all in full, here. I have to admit that I find it fascinating. The way words and communication evolves has always been of interest to me. The author of this piece seems to be disenchanted with the word queer. And to be honest, I for one embrace all the new changes in language and communication. I used to fight the word queer, but the more I’ve seen lately the more I use the word queer. Everything about the LGBTQIA community has evolved over the years, and so have the words we use.

And trust me, I do know many of you are not fond of the changes, and you have every right to choose the words with which you identify. I truly have no problem with the words Lesbian or Gay.

I think it’s also important to take into consideration that gay men have a culture all their own. And this culture has nothing to do with women or anyone else.

Why Gay Men Can't Donate Sperm, Ryan Field Books

Why Gay Men Can’t Donate Sperm

This is something I did not know.

The FDA actually restricts gay men from donating sperm if they have had sex with men for the last five years. Five years??

This article is about a guy named TreVaughn Roach-Carter. He tried to donate sperm but he was rejected because he’s gay. He claims that as a gay black man he wants to help other gay couples who want to build families. And there is a shortage of black sperm donors.  But the day after he gave his sperm, they rejected him. They didn’t even test him for anything else. It was just because he admitted to being gay.

However, according to this article, they don’t really target gay men, per say. There is a long list of reasons why sperm donors get rejected. If you have a certain conditions such as bipolar disorder you will be rejected.

The problem with all this is that the FDA ban on gay men dates back to the early days of AIDS. Even though gay donors are tested and the sperm is quarantined for 6 months, the FDA refuses to end the ban.

I can understand testing thoroughly, but to continue this ban just doesn’t seem right. What if someone lied about not being gay? How do they test for that?

You can read it all, here. It goes into more detail about the lack of black sperm donors.

What Exactly Is In the National Don't Say Gay Bill, Ryan Field Books

What Exactly Is In the National Don’t Say Gay Bill

In short, this new national Don’t Say Gay Bill the Republicans want to pass means the banning of instruction on gender identity, and any sexual orientation. They want this to be mandated from Kindergarten until 3rd grade. It’s interesting to me because I knew I was gay when I was in kindergarten. And it wasn’t a sexual thing. I didn’t know what sex was then. It was more like knowing I was different from the others, but not in a good way. And when I was growing up anything gay was so forbidden it was never discussed. So basically, this new bill would take us backward.

This bill’s language is very broad. They want to stop all programs LGBTQ related for children under the age of ten. Frankly, I don’t want to see kids under the age of ten exposed to anything sexual either. However, being LGBTQ is NOT just sex and sexuality. And to stop kids from talking about who they are is a travesty, especially when there are so many gay parents out there today.

You can read more of the details here. I don’t want to get anything wrong. But I do think this is a direct attack on LGBTQ people all over the US, and it’s the “family values” Christian right that is doing it. And I think what concerns me the most is that if they can do this, what’s next? Are they going to try to criminalize gay people next? Don’t be surprised.
