Gay History: Two Openly Gay Candidates Run Against Each Other for Office in New York

While Hollywood seems to be going backward with regard to actors coming out as gay, politics continues to move forward. There are supposedly 1,095 LGBTQ people who are running or did run for all kinds of political offices this year. And the numbers are up considerably from 2020.

This year, in New York, two openly gay candidates are running against each other for the first time in history. Robert Zimmerman is a Democrat and George Santos is a Republican. In short, this race guarantees that a gay candidate will win.

A political science professor in Kansas believes this was destined to happen. They just had to find an LGBTQ Republican who could gain enough support in the primary. Even though organizations like the Gay Republican Log Cabin have been around for many years, we haven’t seen many openly LGBTQ Republicans running for office.

I think there’s a reason for that. I’ve always been a Democrat, but I’ve always known quite a few gay Republicans and the LGBTQ community is not kind to them. Most are terrified to admit they are Republicans, let alone run for office.

But I think that’s going to be changing in the near future. Here’s more.  The times they are changing.

A Different Kind of Southern Love Story

What readers are saying about “Uncertainty”

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”
