A Call For Gay Men to Change Their Sex Habits Because of Monkeypox, Ryan Field Books

A Call for Gay Men to Change Their Sex Habits Because of Monkeypox

So far, we don’t know that much about Monkeypox other than it’s mostly been hitting gay and bisexual men hard. We do know that it is contracted by skin-to-skin contact, so it’s not technically a sexually transmitted disease. However, skin-to-skin means you can get it from sex with someone who’s infected. It’s very different from AIDS in that respect. There are very specific ways to contract HIV.

However, the gay and bisexual community is being called out in this opinion piece and I’m not sure I think it’s fair. The author talks about AIDS and how gay and bi men faced AIDS back in the 80s, but AIDS was killing gay and bi men. So far, Monkeypox is not doing that. Most of the people I’ve seen get it have recovered fairly quickly. So I don’t think AIDS can be compared to Monkeypox in a fair way.

Until a time when monkeypox hopefully abates, this can and should mean reducing our number of partners, skipping sex parties, practicing monogamy and even being abstinent.

Here’s more. I’m one of those gay men who aren’t going to sex parties or doing hook-up apps, but I’m not looking for any praise for that. And I’m not so sure about this author’s reference to Larry Kramer at the end of the article. I think Larry Kramer would have been irritated that someone decided to compare Monkeypox with something as deadly as AIDS was at one time. The author is only assuming Kramer would agree.

You might want to avoid the comments at the end. They’re not very bright or well-informed.
