Sioux Falls Gay Couple Experience Gay Hate

I don’t like articles like this because they always refer to gay men with phrases like, “sexual orientation.” I think it shows how little straight people know about gay people.  Being gay is not just about sex. We have a history and a culture of our own. So stop it. Just refer to us as gay or queer.

A gay couple in Sioux Falls has experienced anonymous homophobia…because they are gay. Someone left them a homophobic letter with a bag that also had a rock inside.

“It was just so disheartening to receive something like that, especially in the comfort of your own home where you feel safest,” Olson said.

Here’s more.  One of the guys was a Survivor contestant. His name is Mitchell Olson. There is a photo of the bag, the letter, and the rock.

This is why Tony and I have always lived in predominantly gay communities. We know we can’t avoid homophobia completely, but at least we are surrounded by people with like minds. And that’s because when we were first together we lived in a townhome in a mostly straight community…Newtown, PA. It was nice. We liked our home, but one afternoon around Christmastime while Tony and I were outside decorating for Christmas, the little boy next door asked his father, “Can we get a green spotlight like the two f@#s next door? We listed the house for sale the next week and moved 10 miles away to New Hope, where it was mostly gay at the time.

What readers are saying about “Uncertainty”

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”
