Hollywood Isn’t As Gay Friendly As You Would Imagine

I’m always posting about straight Hollywood actors playing gay for pay. I think the most recent gay-for-pay actor is Bradley Cooper playing Leonard Bernstein. The only big star who agrees that it’s wrong to play gay for pay is Tom Hanks. He recently came out against playing gayface and many gay people applauded him for that on Twitter, including openly gay Billy Eichner.

With that said, here is an article that talks about Hollywood and how it’s not as gay-friendly as we think it is. The article even covers some transgender issues with comedians.

“Hollywood is more driven by its fear of what might undermine the bottom line than by its purported championing of marginalized people,” says the granddaughter of company founder Roy Disney.

Here’s more.  This is also why they’re still using straight actors to play gay. Bradley Cooper will attract more straights to the movie than an openly gay actor, or so they think. And it happens in publishing, too. A straight white woman wrote Brokeback Mountain, not a gay man, even though it was gay content. That book was released over 20 years ago and publishing and Hollywood continue to ignore us and appropriate us. They are only our allies on their terms.

We have a long way to go.

A Different Kind of Southern Love Story

What readers are saying about “Uncertainty”

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”
