Straight Authors Writing Gay Characters
I try to remain neutral with this topic but it’s not always easy because I see so much appropriation all the time I get frustrated. With that said I found a nice piece about straight white authors writing gay fiction that handles the topic with care. And even though I don’t agree with it all I respect it. As a gay man, the problem I always find with straights writing gay content is that they never get it right. And they always want to straight-splain how it works to us.
I especially liked this line, below. It really nails it for me. Here’s the link for more.
But I will say that I thought the film Call Me by Your Name was a travesty for gay men. Just the normalization of such a young boy having sex with that older man bothered me. And, it was NOT a gay romance. A gay romance has a happy ending.
The problem comes when a dominant group, because they are seen as having more authority or access to an audience, drowns out the voices of people from other groups telling their own stories.
Bob Chapek Disney CEO Faces Huge Backlash over Don’t Say Gay Bill
I’ve been posting about Disney, Bob Chapek who is the CEO at Disney, and the way Disney is allegedly supporting the backers of the don’t say gay bill in Florida.
Bob Chapek and Disney really didn’t denounce the bill. He put out a gay-friendly response to the LGBTQ people who work at Disney, but it seems that wasn’t enough. Even though he seems to be standing behind LGBTQ people, they want more.
“As we have seen time and again, corporate statements do very little to change outcomes or minds,” Chapek added. “Instead, they are often weaponized by one side or the other to further divide and inflame. Simply put, they can be counterproductive and undermine more effective ways to achieve change.”
Here’s a link to more. His message to LGBTQ people is actually very supportive, at least according to this link. But I knew he was going to face backlash for all of this. And I don’t think it’s possible anymore to remain neutral and silent on certain topics and think you can get away with it. People nowadays will question where you stand.
I want Disney and Chapek to come out and state they don’t support that bill.
