Scott Johnson and 1988 Gay Hate Murder, Ryan Field Books

Scott Johnson and 1988 Gay Hate Murder

This is a strange and sad story about a man who is now confessing to a 1988 gay hate murder. You would think cases like this would have been solved years ago.

For all these years, the death of Scott Johnson at a well-known gay cruising area had been ruled a suicide. But Johnson’s family never believed it. In fact, Scott’s older brother, Steve spent years trying to figure out how Scott died.

And now a guy named Scott White had finally confessed and pleaded guilty to the gay hate murder. But more than that, there were apparently many other gay hate murders at this very same cruise spot.

In 2005 Steve says he became aware of inquests into similar deaths of gay men at Bondi Beach in Sydney – the moment when he says he “woke up” to what might have happened to his younger brother.

Here’s more.  It’s an interesting article, with photos, and it reminds me of what life was like for gay men back then. I was single in the 90s and I used to go to cruise areas on occasion. But I never felt safe or comfortable and I always wound up going home alone. Back then if AIDS didn’t get you, there were always plenty of hate crimes to go around.
