States Watch Same-Sex Marriage Protections

A while back I remember reading an article about a lawmaker in Australia who was getting a lot of resistance because she wasn’t ready to just push same-sex marriage forward. She wanted to make sure we were all legally protected forever with same-sex marriage so they could never take it away from us again. And she was right. The law is the only thing that can protect us. 

With that said, some states are now looking into more protections for same-sex marriage as Roe vs Wade comes under fire. I don’t see the connection between abortion and gay marriage. Abortion is not a celebration of life. It is the ending of a life. Gay marriage is a celebration of life and of new beginnings. I think if SCOTUS were to overturn same-sex marriage this country would be up in arms.    

I also don’t see how the states are going to help us because we need federal protection, not state protection. So I’m not sure where this is all leading, or if it will lead anywhere. It almost resembles fear-mongering to me. 

“We’ve been fighting for marriage equality for decades, and to turn back the clock would be devastating,” New Jersey Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, who co-sponsored the newly passed bill, told NBC News. “I can’t emphasize enough the fact that we need to safeguard it in light of what’s happening on a federal level today.”
