A Wonderful Story About a Gay Nephew and His Gay Uncle

I was blessed in life with a gay nephew and a gay niece. They are brother and sister and I knew they were gay from the time they were kids. Of course, I never said a word about that to anyone. I knew they had to have time and space to come out on their own. And that’s exactly what they did. They came out on their own terms when they were in college and my entire family accepted them. At the time, my mom actually said, “I knew it all along.”  I also have straight nephews and nieces and I love them all equally. 

With that said, here’s a personal story about a gay man and his gay uncle. I think it shows what most gay men go through in life before they come out of the closet. It’s something no one who’s straight will ever understand, which is why I despise it when I see straights appropriating our culture in books and films. 

This story also shows the shame we all deal with. 

What if we laughed at the same thing? What if people realized we have something in common? What if Tito asked me about boys in front of my family? Sadly, it was best for me to avoid him, too, because of who he was. And because of who I didn’t want to be.
