Dark Shadows Star Jonathan Frid Was Gay

Over the years I can’t even count the number of older gay men I’ve known who never actually came out in public. And each one had his own private reason and it was never questioned. And these men weren’t even actors or celebrities. So it’s no surprise that a man who was as well known in pop culture as Jonathan Frid was a closeted gay man. 

There were all kinds of fears associated with being openly gay that ranged from the fact that it was illegal to the shame involved. 

In the article to which I’m linking now, it examines the closeted life of TV star, Jonathan Frid, in a documentary titled, Dark Shadows and Beyond: The Jonathan Frid Story. There were also other actors on Dark Shadows who were gay. Some of whom died from AIDS. 

“In those days it was illegal to be gay,” says actor Barry Fuller, who worked with Frid on stage. “And this played on his mind. And so he was never overtly gay. I talked to my friends who are now in their 80s, and they did the same thing. We were embarrassed about it. We never really talked about it.”

Here’s more. And sadly, this is still happening today. There are many closeted gay actors and celebrities who simply cannot afford to come out of the closet. And I think it’s going to take years for that to change.
