Tony and I are Moving Again and Leaving The Diplomat in Palm Springs, Ryan Field Books

Tony and I Are Moving Again and Leaving The Diplomat In Palm Springs

After we sold our home in New Hope in 2020 we thought we’d move into a new place and spend a while there. After all, we lived in the New Hope house for almost 20 years. Prior to that, we lived in a townhouse for 7 years. We don’t like to move and we usually stay put. That’s been our history.

However, due to circumstances beyond our control with the sale of the New Hope house, we wound up losing the first house we wanted in Palm Springs and we purchased a townhouse in Lambertville, NJ under duress. We needed a place to live and New Hope and Lambertville have always been home to us. But we knew that would only be temporary. We wanted to move to Palm Springs and we sold the Lambertville townhouse in six months to a very nice single woman with two kids.

Then we bought a condo in Palm Springs and moved here full time. But the problem here is that we bought the condo sight unseen. And the first day we arrived to move in we discovered that this condo development, The Diplomat, is not pet friendly.  “No Pets Beyond this Point,” was the first sign I saw and my heart just dropped.

They have 4 acres of land and no one is allowed to bring their pets onto the property. As homeowners, we are forced to bring our pets outside of the property, onto a grass strip along busy Highway 111, and take our chances with heavy traffic. It’s very unsafe, with traffic and vagrants. Our dogs are like our children. Needless to say, that is NOT pet friendly, especially since most places in Palm Springs are so overly pet friendly. Our first small condo in Palm Springs was so dog friendly there were free poop bags everywhere. They welcomed pets. It was wonderful.

We had two choices: stay and deal with a nasty anti-pet friendly HOA, or move. So we decided to leave this place that is so anti-pet friendly and move to a single-family home. The Diplomat has one of those vituperative HOAs, too, that’s always sending out nasty, aggressive e-mails. Tony and I have lived with HOAs before and never had any issues. Tony was president of one HOA where we lived once. But The Diplomat is very different. We’ve never encountered anything as anti-pet friendly before.

So if all goes as planned (and you never know what could still happen) we’ll be moving on in about a month. We sold our condo in The Diplomat and purchased a single-family home in North Palm Springs. We still have great views of the mountains and the wind turbines, but it should be much quieter. North Palm Springs has a much different Vibe than South Palm Springs. It’s newer and there are some nice things happening up there.

And our dog babies will have a safe place to go to the bathroom once again.

Top Gay New Year's Eve Parties 2021, Ryan Field Books

Top Gay New Year’s Eve Parties 2021

Over the last 29 years, Tony and I have done so many different things on New Year’s Eve I tend to forget sometimes. When we first met we would to New York City and spend New Year’s Eve with my gay brother and his partner, Greg, at the time. After that, two good friends of ours started having home parties for NYE, and we loved them because we were so close to home. Then around 1999 we got into a routine where we spent New Year’s Eve up in Provincetown every year. We loved every minute of it. We did that for about 7 years and then we started going to house parties in New Hope, or making reservations at local restaurants. There was that one year in 2014 on New Year’s Eve when we had to cancel our restaurant plans because our 15-year-old dog was sick. And that night we drove him to the local Animal emergency room in 13-degree weather. We wound up putting him down that night, on New Year’s Eve. They did everything they could. It was time and we knew it.

Then New Year’s Eve became a hit or miss for us, and now we mostly stay home and go to bed. We are not that old… middle-aged…but COVID is still around and we kind of like being home. It’s nice when you finally reach that age when you don’t feel obligated to go out for New Year’s Eve.

However, there are still plenty of things happening for gay people on New Year’s Eve.

New Year celebrations not to be missed this year include the return of the epic Masterbeat weekend in Los Angeles to the more intimate First Light Festival in PTown! From Amsterdam to Sydney, here are our editors top top gay New Year parties and events.

Here’s more.  This is more focused on global events, but it’s interesting to see what others are doing.

Aging Gay Man Talks about the Negatives of Getting Older in Gay Culture, Ryan Field Books

Aging Gay Man Talks about the Negatives of Getting Older in Gay Culture

I’ve seen it all my life. As gay men age, they become invisible and it really sucks. Unless of course, they have a lot of money. The young ones still flock to the older gay men with money. And don’t tell me it’s for love. I’ve seen it before too many times. If these older gay men didn’t have money there would also be invisible. Aging is a rough part of being a gay man. And here’s an article about a guy who talks about it openly.

As a gay man who recently turned 60, I’m pretty sure my life is over. Yes, it’s possible that the graying temples, eye wrinkles and extra padding – which has extinguished my dream of ever having discernible abs – have also ushered in a new era of melodrama.

Here’s more. You’ll need a subscription to read the rest. But it’s worth reading. I don’t think getting older is easy on anyone, gay or straight. But in gay culture, the focus has always been so youth-oriented.

New Approach to Gay and Bisexual Men with Prostate Cancer, Ryan Field Books

New Approach to Gay and Bisexual Men with Prostate Cancer

A lot of gay men get a prostate cancer diagnosis and the typical thing to do is remove the prostate.  In this particular case, in this article, the gay man had the surgery and it all went well. But he had issues with the fact that so many involved with his situation were not equipped to handle a gay man. There are a lot of emotional and psychological factors that weren’t being addressed, and he felt frustrated. So he looked for help in a different way.

Mr. Curtin’s search for a different approach led him to Dr. Channa Amarasekera, director of the Gay and Bisexual Men’s Urology Program at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago.

Here’s more.  It’s not always possible but I try to stick with gay doctors. I think they understand gay men better and there’s a much better relationship. It’s comfortable.

San Francisco Teachers Fight For Their Jobs After Speaking About LGBTQ Student Outreach, Ryan Field Books

San Francisco Teachers Fight For Their Jobs After Speaking About LGBTQ Student Outreach

I saw this trending on Twitter this week and thought it was an interesting post. Two San Fransico school teachers are now fighting for their jobs after they were secretly recorded talking about LGBTQ student outreach. A conservative writer wound up with a recording of the conversations and it only made matters worse.

She published a story Nov. 18 headlined “How Activist Teachers Recruit Kids,” criticizing Caldeira and Baraki for actions they had seen as proper: keeping club members’ identities confidential from parents and finding a couple of potential members by viewing their online activity in class.

Here’s more. The two teachers involved have received violent threats. And there’s a comment that states there are kids who are out in school, but not out in their homes. And I’m not surprised. Overcoming the shame that has been put upon LGBTQ kids by these ignorant conservative zealots is not simple. We know we are gay by the time we are in middle school. Gay kids don’t need conservatives telling them otherwise.

First US gay bishop reflects on Desmond Tutu

When Rev. Gene  Robinson wasn’t allowed to participate in a global Anglo gathering because he’s gay, Desmond Tutu was the only person who came to Robinson’s defense.

“Gene Robinson is a wonderful human being, and I am proud to belong to the same church as he,” Tutu wrote in the foreword to a book Robinson published that year.

Huge Shock: Straight's Discover There Were Gay NFL Players in the 90s, Ryan Field Books

Huge Shock: Straight’s Discover There Were Gay NFL Players in the 90s

I often find it interesting whenever I see straight people talking about transgender people or gay people. They seem to think that it’s something new and different. And yet we’ve been here all along and they never care enough to notice. And that goes for all LGBTQ people. We have ALWAYS been here. And now we are telling you we are here and that you should move over.

With that said, here’s a story about a closeted gay NFL player in the 90s. It’s really a story about NFL’s Bruce Smith and a closeted gay player (or two) that no one knew about.

“We had a gay player in our locker room,” Smith says … “I think it was the mid to late 90s and I think we might have had two but that wasn’t what we were focused on.”

Here’s more. And guess what? Right now, as you read this, there are more closeted gay professional athletes than you ever dreamed there were. They’re just not willing to let you know yet.

Gay Brothers In Chechnya Do a Hunger Strike, Ryan Field Books

Gay Brothers In Chechnya Do a Hunger Strike

The stories from Chechnya are still coming, and this one is about a couple of gay brothers who are doing a hunger strike because they have been detained. It’s not uncommon to see gay brothers. I have two brothers and one is gay. I also have a nephew and a niece, brother and sister, who are also gay. You can see a photo of them at the link, below.

Brothers Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev have announced through a local LGBTQ+ rights group Wednesday that they are beginning a hunger strike after a judge denied their request to move their case to another region.

Here’s the rest. I wish there were some way that Chechnya could be held accountable for its lack of compassion with regard to human rights. It’s a disgusting place.

Gay Olympic Diver Ian Matos Dead At 32 Years Old, Ryan Field Books

Gay Olympic Diver Ian Matos Dead At 32 Years Old

This is unusual because the guy is so young. Ian Matos, an openly gay Brazilian Olympic diver, recently died from what they are calling a “lung infection.” He was only 32 years old. They mention nothing about COVID in this article. I know that’s what everyone wonders at first. Supposedly, this infection started in his throat and spread to other parts of his body during a long hospitalization.

“We are profoundly saddened to have received the news of the premature death of the Olympic diver Ian Matos, aged just 32,” Brazil’s Olympic Committee said in a statement

Here’s a link. There are more details about Matos. That’s just too young. His life was only just beginning.

James Franco Finally Talks about Sexual Misconduct Allegations and His Sex "Addiction," Ryan Field Book

James Franco Finally Talks about Sexual Misconduct Allegations and His Sex “Addiction”

There hasn’t been much about James Franco in the news in 4 years. But he’s finally coming out now and talking about the sex abuse allegations, how he settled with the alleged victims, and his so-called “sex addiction.” (Like many others, I’m on the fence about whether or not sex addiction is a real thing.

In any event, Franco is back giving interviews and he still sounds as though he’s full of crap. I’m not his biggest fan for many reasons. One of which is the movie he made about gay culture, and the way he played gayface. It’s called King Cobra and I posted about all that here. He’s played gayface a few times. He’s been known to gay-bait and queer-bait. And overall, I just can’t stand him.

In a 2019 lawsuit, Tither-Kaplan and Gaal claimed Franco and his business partners “engaged in widespread inappropriate and sexually charged behavior towards female students by sexualizing their power as a teacher and an employer by dangling the opportunity for roles in their projects,” according to court documents previously obtained by PEOPLE.

Here’s more. They also talk about how Franco settled with the alleged victims for over 2 million dollars. I hate the way everyone associated with the movie King Cobra treated Brent Corrigan. And it was Brent Corrigan’s life story those sleazy straights were doing.

In a post to Facebook, Corrigan said: “The internet has been a buzz regarding some recent news that a movie is being filmed right now in New York State chronicling the Bryan Kocis murder and the early days of my adult career.
