Do White Gay Men Even Know About Cultural Appropriation? Ryan Field Books

Do White Gay Men Even Know About Cultural Appropriation?

In a world where straight actors think nothing of playing gay characters, straight women authors think nothing of writing gay romance novels, and almost everyone in publishing and Hollywood doing gay content for profit seems to be straight, it makes me wonder what gay men are thinking. Why isn’t there more outrage? Why isn’t there more support for openly gay actors and writers?

Well, this article focuses on the cultural appropriation of gay men, and the need for them to confront it. It’s time. I personally do understand it, as an openly gay author I’ve been a victim of it, and I’m always trying to bring awareness out about it, almost daily. But it’s like some gay men just don’t want to face it. I’m not sure. I truly don’t understand it.

In championing our own human rights as a community, it makes sense to look to the other marginalised groups in society like culturally diverse and Indigenous communities and extend our hands of understanding, instead of being complicit in appropriating aspects of their culture we find fashionable or cool.

Here’s the rest. I do this all the time, Whenever I see someone appropriating gay culture in any way, I tell them to do that with any other marginalized group and see how far it gets them.
