US Navy Finally Launches Ship Christened After Gay Right’s Leader Harvey Milk

Well, it’s about time. It took almost 70 years for the US Navy to give Havey Milk the appreciation he deserves. In fact, few straight people even know that Milk was in the Navy and that he was discharged after being interrogated about his sexuality.

In the 1950s being “Gay” didn’t even exist. Among many pejoratives, you were considered “homosexual.” The term “Gay” came into existence sometime in the late 1960s.

“Leaders like Harvey Milk taught us that diversity of backgrounds and experiences help contribute to the strength and resolve of our nation. There is no doubt that the future Sailors aboard this ship will be inspired by Milk’s life and legacy,” Del Toro said.

Here’s more. We still have a long way to go, but this is progress.

You can read more about Harvey Milk, here.  He led a very interesting life and there’s even a feature film about him. I remember the first time I heard about Milk. I was just a kid and there was an older PBS documentary about him. For me, it was intense in more ways than one.
