The Deep Divide on Gay Rights and Homophobic Conservatives in Europe

This article begins with an assault on a gay couple in Italy. Italy lacks a hate crime law, which I never knew. We here in the US always think of Europe as being so progressive. In any event, someone proposed a hate crime law for Italy, and just like in the US the far right-wing in Italy wants no part of a hate crime law for LGBTQ people. They get into “homosexual propaganda,” and the Vatican even got involved.

Ultimately, the Italian senate rejected a hate crime bill, which left Europe even more culturally divided than it’s been.

The gay rights debate in Europe has echoes of the U.S. battle over “wokeness” — a still novel, if growing, concept for many on the other side of the Atlantic. It fits more directly into the box of what some rights organizations have called “political homophobia,” or homophobia as a political strategy.

Here’s more. Some are even bringing children into this and proposing laws that prohibit content that promotes anything LGBTQ-related. They always do that. The conservatives always want to protect children against LGBTQ content. But the GD idiots never realize there are, indeed, LGBTQ childrent.

So LGBTQ people will have to keep fighting harder.
