Going Gay For Pay Playing Gayface: Should Gay Roles Be reserved for Gay Actors

Time and again I see this argument pop up and time and again I see the same old lame replies. “It’s only acting.” “Anyone should be able to act any part they want.” “If straight actors can’t play gay roles than gay actors can’t play straight roles.”

None of it holds up. It’s simply a form of white privilege that cannot see the reality. First, if it were only acting Meryl Streep would be allowed to play Rosa Parks. I’m sure Streep could do it. But I don’t think she would be stupid enough to do that. Second, Just because an actor can play a part well doesn’t mean they should be doing it. It’s just as offensive to see white actors playing Asian characters.  And third, this argument that gay actors should be playing straight parts makes no sense. ALL gay people were straight at one time. We all know what it’s like to be straight. WE DID THAT. Plus, mainstream privilege can’t be culturally appropriated. They make all the rules.

And this debate just continues.

Some voices in the debate, understandably agitated by the news that Jack Whitehall has been cast as a camp gay man in Disney’s Jungle Cruise, have even used the term “gayface” to describe straight actors going gay for pay, echoing the “blackface” of Laurence Olivier in Othello or Alec Guinness in A Passage to India.

Here’s more. It may take a while, but I know where this debate will end and I want to be on the right side of history.
