American Horror Story Part 2, Gay Men, Rimming, and Giardia

When Tony and I brought our Moyen Poodle, Jax, into our home 2 years ago he was only 8 weeks old. He’d already had some of his shots but we got him to the vet just as you would normally do with any new puppy and had him checked out thoroughly. He got a few more shots and was tested for worms. One test result came back immediately, which was the test for giardia. It’s a parasite that’s actually fairly common in puppies and the vet gave us some meds to get rid of it.

Although, it wasn’t as easy to get rid of as I had hoped. It took four different tries and five different tests to make sure poor Jax didn’t have Giardia. And through all that we made sure we washed our hands every time we touched him. It’s not that common for humans to get it from dogs, but the vet also said it wasn’t impossible. So we took precautions. In the end, Jax lost the giardia and Tony and I were fine.

But last night while watching the latest version of American Horror Story Part 2 “Death Valley,” giardia was mentioned in association with gay men and gay sex and I was stunned. Evidently, gay men can get it from rimming. Or for that matter any human can get it from direct exposure.

Giardia infection (giardiasis) is one of the most common causes of waterborne disease in the United States. The parasites are found in backcountry streams and lakes but also in public water supplies, swimming pools, whirlpool spas and wells. Giardia infection can be spread through food and person-to-person contact.

Here’s more

According to one web site the most common way for a human to get is direct mouth to ass. What they also failed to mention on AHS Death Valley is that most gay men do NOT practice rimming. At least most of the gay men I’ve ever known. And we do talk about these things.

Here’s more about AHS Death Valley. I’m liking it so far. It’s called “Death Valley” but it’s really set in Jushua Tree which isn’t far from Palm Springs. We were just up there during Labor Day. It’s considered the High Desert. And you get to see Ike and Mamie Eisenhower in Palm Springs in the 1950s, too.
