Going Gay For Pay Playing Gayface: Should Gay Roles Be reserved for Gay Actors
Time and again I see this argument pop up and time and again I see the same old lame replies. “It’s only acting.” “Anyone should be able to act any part they want.” “If straight actors can’t play gay roles than gay actors can’t play straight roles.”
None of it holds up. It’s simply a form of white privilege that cannot see the reality. First, if it were only acting Meryl Streep would be allowed to play Rosa Parks. I’m sure Streep could do it. But I don’t think she would be stupid enough to do that. Second, Just because an actor can play a part well doesn’t mean they should be doing it. It’s just as offensive to see white actors playing Asian characters. And third, this argument that gay actors should be playing straight parts makes no sense. ALL gay people were straight at one time. We all know what it’s like to be straight. WE DID THAT. Plus, mainstream privilege can’t be culturally appropriated. They make all the rules.
And this debate just continues.
Some voices in the debate, understandably agitated by the news that Jack Whitehall has been cast as a camp gay man in Disney’s Jungle Cruise, have even used the term “gayface” to describe straight actors going gay for pay, echoing the “blackface” of Laurence Olivier in Othello or Alec Guinness in A Passage to India.
Here’s more. It may take a while, but I know where this debate will end and I want to be on the right side of history.
Playing Gay for Pay: Two Straight Male Actors Are Playing Gayface Again and Josh O’Connor Is One of Them
It’s never fails. As if it wasn’t bad enough that Josh O’Connor already played gayface in a movie called God’s Own Country, he’s at it again with a new gay film titled, The History of Sound. And he’ll be starring with another non-gay actor who will be playing gayface. Yes, while millions of openly or closeted real gay actors struggle to find work in films and TV, these two privileged straights seemed to have found a good thing in life. Playing Gay for Pay.
O’Connor previously appeared as an English sheep farmer in the gay film “God’s Own Country,” directed by”Ammonite” director Francis Lee. He is a recent Golden Globe and Emmy winner and recently received a third BAFTA nomination for his role as Prince Charles in Netflix’s “The Crown.”
Here’s more. It’s repulsive. And frankly, I can’t believe no one has told them.
However, the interesting thing is that these projects never last. Films like Gods and Monsters are classic and we watch them over and over. But these quasi-gay fake movies just crash and burn.
Many LGBTQ People think of Halloween as Gay Christmas
Admittedly, Tony and I never thought of Halloween as “Gay Christmas.” We never paid much attention to Halloween and it wasn’t a huge holiday for us. We did go to Provincetown for 15 years for Halloween but that was more about the fall colors and experiencing Cape Cod in the fall. We never actually put on costumes and celebrated.
But some LGBTQ people think differently. They literally plan for this time of year. I just wish they wouldn’t make such broad generalizations. Not all LGBTQ people feel this way.
“Halloween gives queer people a chance to let their freak flag fly and be as explicit and insane looking as possible.”
Here’s more. I think there are straight people who do the same thing. I think it’s a huge holiday for everyone these days.
Most Millennials Don’t Know the New Words Added to Merriam Webster Dictionary
This doesn’t surprise me in the least. Most millennials don’t even know how to pronounce words anymore. They call Amazon, “EEE-mah-Zahn.” And there’s a whole slew of other words they don’t pronounce correctly. And you wonder what they have been learning in schools all this time.
Here’s one of the words that tend to confuse them. I’ve known about this for a while. This is what social media did to Milos Yiannopoulos. They snatched it right out from under him.
I saw this and was proud of myself for no longer wearing my beloved Bass flip-flops from the 2000s. But apparently it means “to prevent from having or providing a platform to communicate.”
Here’s more. Youn can check them out at this link to see if you know them. Some of them might stump you, too.
- Josh Cavallo Pro Footballer Comes Out as Gay
I know I say this all the time, but this kind of news never gets tired. There are still so many closeted LGBTQ people out there it’s always wonderful to see more come out. This time it’s a well known footballer.
It’s been a journey to get to this point in my life, but I couldn’t be happier with my decision to come out,” he wrote. “I have been fighting my sexuality for over six years now, and I’m glad I can put that to rest.
Here is the rest.
According to Cavallo, there are more footballers still in the closet.

Gay Characters In Eternals Might Be Censored For International Markets
It’s no secret that certain global markets aren’t as LGBT-friendly as the US. So there’s a strong possibility that Chloe Zhao’s Eternals might be censored with regard to LGBTQ characters in other parts of the world. Zhao doesn’t want to see the film censored but she might not have a choice. In many places (even here in the US) anything with gay characters or gay content is considered adults only material and “they” will censor it.
But it remains to be seen if the studio’s arm eventually gets pulled by censorship organizations in markets overseas. Because Disney will presumably want Eternals on as many screens as possible.
Here’s more. No one is really sure how this will turn out. So now it’s a waiting game to see how the film is released. It’s supposed to drop in movie theaters on November 5.
Ban On Gay Blood Finally Repealed in Israel
This was great news. After years of antiquated thinking about gay men and AIDS, the ban on gay blood has finally been repealed in Israel. I think it also shows how Israel isn’t homophobic like so much of that part of the world. In some places, in that part of the world, gay people are persecuted. However, in Israel even the health minister, Nitzan Horowitz, is openly gay. And now he cab donate blood.
“There is no difference between blood and blood,” Horowitz, who is gay, said during his blood donation at the Magen David Adom compound in Jerusalem. “The ban on gays donating blood was the remnant of a stereotype that should be left in history.”
Here’s the rest. Now maybe the rest of the world will catch on and do that same thing.
Don’t Be Afraid of Virginia’s Woolf
“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed, and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”
What readers said about “Altered Parts”
“Best Gay Novel In Years. This story will stay with you and you will feel you know every character and the beauty of their home in the mountains of North Carolina.”
School Play with Gay Character Shut Down in Ohio
Gay content has always been censored. Up until recently it was even censored in publishing with regard to books and magazines. It doesn’t have to be adult gay content. It could be rated G and totally safe, but if there is a gay character or gay content there will always be certain straights who will censor it. Mostly, they either find it offensive or they believe it’s not safe for children. They have no idea that there are…and always have been…gay children who need good solid gay content.
I’ve experienced the censorship myself over the years with books and various web sites. This is one reason why I never felt comfortable getting involved with organizations like RWA. It’s not all of RWA. It’s certain branches that always made me uncomfortable. I knew I would never be treated with the respect that other marginalized groups receive from RWA, and I knew there were undertones in certain branches. Maybe things have changed, but I highly doubt it. There were certain women heavily involved in RWA with whom I never felt comfortable. I don’t need that in my life. I’m the marginalized writer, not them. And I have no problem telling them.
And now this is happening in Ohio.
The production of “She Kills Monsters” at Hillsboro High School was deemed “not appropriate for our K-12 audience,” Hillsboro City Schools Superintendent Tim Davis said in a statement to WKRC. The popular play, which has been performed throughout the country, features a character who is implied to be gay.
Here’s more. I find it sad this is still happening.
Lucie Arnaz Is An Executive Producer of the New Movie About Her Parents Titled “Being the Ricardos”
There’s an upcoming movie on Amazon Prime about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz called Being the Ricardos. The exact content has been sketchy from the start, but the general theme seems to be about a crisis that happened during a week when they were filming the show. I’m wondering if maybe it was about when Lucy was accused of being a communist? I don’t know, though. That’s just speculation on my part.
Ever since the film was announced fans of I love Lucy have been expressing their opinions, and most don’t sound too thrilled. For one thing, Nicole Kidman is playing Lucy and no one seems thrilled about that. In the same respect, no one has been more supportive of the film than Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. She’s gone on social media and she’s really singing the praises. The only problem is that very few people know Lucie Arnaz is an executive producer, and she should be admitting that while she’s promoting the film. Most people don’t realize it. So let’s keep it real. In the spirit of full disclosure, and basic information from the Internet, there’s this:
Despite being an executive producer (along with her brother, Desi Arnaz Jr.), Lucie revealed there were times she struggled with wanting to change some of the fictionalized storylines. “I mean, there are certain scenes that I wished hadn’t been in the feature film,” she told Palm Springs Life.
Here’s more. That last statement alone makes me wonder. But I’m keeping an open mind and I’ll look for reviews that aren’t promotions. I’ll probably watch it and see for myself as well. The problem for me is that people have tried to recreate the lives of Lucy and Desi and no one has ever been successful.
Gay Man Attacked and Beaten by Neighbors In DC
This one is really scary. It involves a woman, her daughter, and a straight guy who allegedly punched a gay man in the face while calling him all kinds of anti-gay slurs laced with antisemitic names. It supposedly happened where the victim lives and these were his neighbors.
And this wasn’t just the first time the gay man was confronted by these homophobic neighbors. It sounds as though it’s been an ongoing situation.
He said that minutes before the Oct. 13 attack, Ellis yelled the words “Jewish faggot” when he walked past her as she was talking to his roommate, Steven Johnson. Zephir said it is well known among his neighbors at the apartment complex that he is of the Jewish faith.
