The Date Shake is the Unofficial Drink of Palm Springs, CA

This isn’t gay news or publishing news, but I think it’s pop culture news. And it’s interesting. We were coming to Palm Springs for a long time before we even knew date shakes existed. When I discovered them, I couldn’t get enough.

The founders of Shields Date Garden in Indio, which features a series of sculptures portraying events from Jesus’s life alongside their date palms, came up with a way to crystallize the dates, turning them into something resembling oatmeal. Someone—no one is positive who—then came up with the idea of mixing them with ice cream, thus creating the unofficial beverage of Palm Springs: the date shake.

Here’s the rest. I’ve had date shakes from Shields Date Garden, and from several other places in the Coachella Valley. There’s even a place called the Windmill Market up in North Palm Springs that makes them. And they are all excellent. If you’re in Palm Springs for any reason, you have to try them. Just google date palm shake and you’ll get tons of results.
