Look an Openly Gay Actor Playing an Openly Gay Character, The Homophobic Characters and Storyline, and They’re Not Doing Rimming Right in HBO’s “The White Lotus”

This contains spoilers, so you’ve been warned. If you haven’t seen The White Lotus yet, stop reading and come back later.

I posted about a new miniseries on HBO titled, The White Lotus earlier this week and they have been promoting it with one little rimming scene. It’s their clickbait and it’s not a big deal. I’ll get to that at the end of this post.

For me, the main focus is the homophobic storyline and the homophobic characters. The series itself is not homophobic. In fact, there’s a gay character that I think is done very well. This is actually a gay character that’s played by an openly gay man, Murray Bartlett. Normally we see straights playing gayface.

But the homophobic storyline is important because gay people see this kind of thing all the time. One of the characters…a straight dad type…finds out that his own dad was gay and that he died of AIDS many years earlier. This straight guy always thought his dad died of cancer. But as it turns out, his dad was closeted gay, he lived a double life, and he died of AIDS.

Well, you should see this straight guy lose it. When he finds out that his dad was gay and that he died from AIDS, there’s no comforting him. He is devastated to find out he had a closeted gay dad. His wife is no help either. She’s as homophobic as the guy is. They have two kids and the daughter is actually the one who points out that they are homophobic. Of course, the husband and wife don’t think they’re homophobic and they dismiss her, as homophobic straights normally do.

Here’s more about The White Lotus. I highly suggest watching it. It’s a little slow at first, it’s not earth-shattering, but I think they handle the gay content well.

Set in a tropical resort, it follows the exploits of various guests and employees over the span of a week.

As a side note, there is a so-called “rimming scene,” however, they aren’t doing it right. It’s really all wrong. If they think that’s rimming, someone should tell them.
