How Marriage Equality Started In Vermont and the Documentary Tony and I Did Called “The State of Marriage”

Back in 2014, I posted about our legal gay wedding in Vermont, here. It started out as just a quiet little weekend so that we could get legally married after being together for over 20 years. We didn’t even have family or friends there. We didn’t want to make anyone feel obligated to travel 10 hours by car to Vermont for our wedding. We chose Vermont because it’s so rich with same-sex marriage history. 

We were all set to go when we received a phone call from the owners of the B&B in Vermont two weeks before the wedding asking us if we would like our wedding to be part of a documentary titled, “The State of Marriage,” and if we would like to have Vermont Supreme Court Justice, Beth Robinson, perform our ceremony. 

Of course, we jumped at the chance to have a Vermont Supreme Court Justice marry us. Especially someone like Beth Robinson who’s been so active in marriage history. And that’s why I’m linking to this article today. The documentary will be repeated this month…Pride Month…and I wanted to share this. It’s a very good article about the history behind same-sex marriage, and it’s completely authentic. No straight washing with this one. 

“These two heroic women, Susan Murray and Beth Robinson, with Boston attorney Mary Bonauto, created the first successful legal arguments for marriage equality,” said Ross. “They became the precedent for everything that followed.”

Here’s the rest. There’s a clip at this link and Tony and I are in the clip, but if you blink too fast you’ll miss it. However, the most wonderful thing for us about all this was getting married by Beth Robinson. The documentary was just the icing on the proverbial cake.
