Ewan McGregor Plays Gayface In “Halston” TV Series With No Shame
I’m beginning to think that gay people will wind up becoming the only marginalized group in the history of this entire world where it’s okay to appropriate them and their culture in films and in books. Even though there’s been an ongoing discussion about whether or not straight privileged actors should play gayface, Hollywood continues to do it without apology and they come up with a million reasons why it’s okay for them to do it. They will sit there and splain this to gay people as if they actually do know better. It’s truly amazing how much we are still willing to take.
The most recent one is from straight actor, Ewan McGregor, splaining to us…to gay people…why it’s okay for him to play gayface. This is rich.
But McGregor, in the case of this project decided that “if it had been a story about Halston’s sexuality more, then maybe it’s right that gay actors should play that role. But in this case — and I don’t want to sound like I’m worming out of this, because it’s something I did think a lot about — I suppose ultimately I felt like it was just one part of who he was.”
Here’s more. If you check out the reviews, thousands of straights are defending him and his right to play gay. They believe it’s just about the “acting.” And the majority of them truly believe being gay is only about sexuality.
Halston’s family has come out publically against the TV series. You can read more about that, here.
In an additional statement to T&C, Lesley Frowick, Halston’s niece and CEO and founder of his archive further explained: “The producers of this ‘miniseries’ on our beloved uncle Halston did not contact or secure the authorization from the Halston Archives or family. Thus it is unauthorized.”
