Republican Candidate for VA Lieutenant Governor Denounces Another Anti-Gay Republican
Now that we’re seeing more and more Republicans accept LGBTQ people, I think we’ll be seeing even more stories like this one begin to surface. The world has changed and public acceptance for gay people is at an all-time high. And I think this will continue. We’re everywhere. With that said, I know for so many gay people this is such a black and white issue, and they were taught to believe that anyone who’s Republican is anti-gay, but it’s not so black and white for everyone. The mayor of my hometown, New Hope, PA, was Republican and he didn’t have a homophobic bone in his body. In fact, he performs gay marriages all the time. So I think we’re all going to have to broaden our horizons eventually and listen more carefully. And there are still a lot of gay people in the closet.
The issue came to light earlier this week when Del. Glenn Davis Jr. (R-Virginia Beach) sent a tweet condemning former delegate Tim Hugo, a fellow Republican in the race for lieutenant governor, for being connected to the mailer that showed Davis attending a PrideFest event wearing a rainbow-striped shirt. The mailer was sent to convention delegates with a message claiming Davis was not a true Republican.
