A New Kind of Blackface on the Internet: Digital Blackface
I’m am convinced that when it comes to things like blackface and digital blackface there are two kinds of people in the world. And it has nothing to do with being liberal or conservative. There’s the hypocritical Justin Trudeau kind who did blackface years ago and thought nothing of doing it, and then there’s the kind of person like me and millions of others who would never, EVER have done blackface then or now. We knew it was wrong to do blackface years ago, and no one had to tell us. But that’s apparently not the case with everyone.
Apparently, there’s no end to it either. There’s a new term going around the Internet called Digital Blackface. I think this article explains it well. In fact, I think this is one of the best explanations I’ve seen in a while.
Digital blackface, Wong writes, “culturally appropriates the language and expressions of black people for entertainment, while dismissing the severity of everyday instances of racism black people encounter, such as police brutality, job discrimination, and educational inequity.”
Here’s the rest. I don’t think it’s just digital blackface. I see digital gayface online all the time, too. These clueless straights, liberal or conservative, will think nothing of appropriating gay culture the same way.
