Billy Eichner Thinks He Invented Gay Rom-Com
I think the keywords here are “major studio.” Because there have been many gay rom coms done over the years but they’ve always been low budget and not very mainstream. If you have Amazon Prime you can probably stream so many you’ll lose track. With that said, I do think Billy Eichner is doing a huge disservice to the many, many others who’ve been doing gay romantic comedy before him. And frankly, it’s not the best way to get gay men like me to watch or support his movie.
“In shocking news, BROS will be the first rom com about gay men ever produced by a major studio and, apparently, I’m the first openly gay man to ever write and star in their own studio film,” he tweeted. “Only took 100 years! THANKS HOLLYWOOD!!!”
Here’s the rest of the story. The film drops in August of 2022. I’m not sure I’ll be watching it because I’ve never been a huge fan of Eichner’s comedy or Billy Eichner. And I have tried. I’ve really tried. But I’d rather watch paint dry.
