“Call Me by Your Name” Director Defends Straight Actors Playing Gayface
The movie Call Me by Your Name was problematic for me from the beginning. Starting with the fact that the book was written by a straight man. I despise this movie for many reasons I’m not getting into now. For me, the entire movie is cringe, and it reminds me of how far we still have to go for total equality.
Yet I’m not shocked to see the director defend what they did with this movie. They always say something similar to this. But he makes one HUGE mistake in thinking that being gay is simply about sex and sexuality. Gay is a culture, too.
The idea that a marginalised minority should be given the opportunity to portray themselves on the big screen was dismissed by Guadagnino in a new interview with The Independent.
I’d like to see him cast Meryl Streep in the lead role of the Rosa Parks life story and see how well that goes over. I don’t think Streep would be happy about playing blackface.
Here’s more. I keep saying this, and I’ve been posting about all this for years now, people are going to start questioning all this cultural appropriation for monetary gain and it is not going to end well for some people.
