Brooklyn’s East River State Park Renamed for Marsha P. Johnson
This was nice to see. We’re finally getting some recognition in history. Marsha P. Johnson, aka Malcolm Michaels Jr., was a gay activist who identified as a drag queen.
Brooklyn’s East River State Park is being renamed Marsha P. Johnson State Park, Governor Andrew Cuomo said in an August 24 announcement that coincided with the late LGBTQ icon’s 75th birthday.
Here’s more about the park. There are a few excellent photos of how the park is going to look. It’s beautiful.
Here’s also more about Johnson. There’s a lot of interesting material just in this one link alone. Like the fact that Johnson was one of the first drag queens allowed in the gay only bar, Stonewall. There’s also more history about the Stonewall Riots.
