Annette Bening Explains Why Cis Actors Shouldn’t Play Trans Roles

I’ve been talking about this for a long time, and I have the posts here on this web site to prove it. I don’t like it when straight actors play gay face, and I especially don’t like to see cis actors play trans roles. It has nothing to do with “acting.” Any good actor can play any role. That’s not the argument here. The moral and ethical question is should they be playing any role? You don’t see white actors playing blackface anymore…thankfully.

With that said, Annette Bening has weighed in on the topic of cis actors playing trans roles, and why they should not be doing this. Bening also has a trans son.

Numerous cis actors have made names for themselves by playing trans characters, including Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Elle Fanning (3 Generations), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Matt Bomer (Anything), and Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry).

You can read more here. I agree with her 110%.

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed, and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”
