Does LGBTQ Media Have a Future?
This is an interesting question. Over the years I have seen times when the gay presses seemed to thrive, and then times when they seemed to struggle. Right now I think many are struggling. We lost Gay Star News last year and it was one of my favorite online news outlets. I think one of the issues is that gay presses tend to slant the news and they usually put a spin on every story that’s published. I don’t mind that and I understand why they do this, however, not everyone agrees with me. It’s a huge turn off for many other gay men and they will totally dismiss that kind of bias.
With that said, here’s an article that talks about whether or not LGBTQ media can survive.
But now, amid mass layoffs that have affected the media landscape at large, LGBT media finds itself in a state of flux.
Here’s a link to read more. I honestly don’t know what to predict. I do think, however, that if LGBTQ presses were to step up their game and stop being so partisan they would double their chances of survival. And all they have to do is remain objective and not take sides, which is what journalism is really all about. That’s it. Objectivity never offended anyone. And they can still publish all the pop culture features they want, which is what I love the most about LGBTQ media.
NFL Star Ryan O’Callaghan On Coming Out
We hear about how homophobic professional sports still is in many respects, so this story is wonderful to read. It’s about a brave NFL star, Ryan O’Callaghan, and the courage he found to come out.
“I never did a single thing with a guy where anyone would ever suspect I was gay,” O’Callaghan tells The Advocate. “But for some reason I thought that at any moment I was going to be outed.”
Here’s the link to more. He touches on so many topics all gay men can relate to. Straight people tend to underestimate the magnitude of coming out. Last week I read something where someone with good intentions mentioned that schools should be more aggressive when it comes to stopping the mean kids that bully gay kids. The problem with that is that very few gay kids will ever admit they’ve been bullied. They would rather suffer the bullies quietly than talk openly about being gay.
I highly suggest reading this. It shows how difficult things still are in some respect.
