From Netflix and Chill To Disney and Thrust; Al Sharpton Rejects Pete Buttigieg’s Claim; Ryan Field Books

From Netflix and Chill To Disney and Thrust

I could be wrong, but I have this feeling lot of people don’t know the true meaning of Netflix and chill. I see them tweeting it all the time on Twitter and they really do think the chill part is about eating snacks, devouring pizza, and watching streaming TV. But chill means a whole lot more. If you don’t know, here’s a link.

This is about Disney and Thrust. It’s been big on Twitter. It’s also a lot more direct than Netflix and Chill.

Sure, it might be a bit more on the nose, but you’ve got the plausibility of an overnight Mandalorian binge-watch working in your favor.

You can read it all, here. It’s also part of pop culture, which is why I link to these things.

Al Sharpton Rejects Pete Buttgieg’s Claim

I’d like to really remain objective with this one because I know a lot of people are very sensitive to this subject. I also like both Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris and I think they are the future in the US. This story has been unfolding for a while. Pete Buttigieg made a comment about the fact that he understands discrimination because he’s gay. Here’s the statement.

“While I do not have the experience of ever having been discriminated against because of the color of my skin, I do have the experience of sometimes feeling like a stranger in my own country, turning on the news and seeing my own rights come up for debate, and seeing my rights expanded by a coalition of people like me and people not at all like me,” Buttigieg said during the CNN debate earlier this month.

Apparently, this statement caused trouble for Pete with black voters, which made Kamala Harris come out with her own statement disputing Buttigieg. And now Al Sharpton has weighed in with comments of his own.

“I think Kamala had a point, and I understood what she was saying.” He said he appreciates the effort Buttigieg is making in the black community and admitted that he is “evolving,” but said the South Bend, Indiana, mayor still has a long way to go.

A Gay Man Named Lem Billings Was President Kennedy’s Best Friend; Struggle To Make a Movie About Joey Stefano; Ryan Field Books

A Gay Man Named Lem Billings Was President Kennedy’s Best Friend

I’ve read tons of biographies and memoirs about both President Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy and the same names come up in all the books. And one of those names is Lem Billings. But there are never any details about Lem Billings, and yet he was one of President Kennedy’s closest friends. They met each other in boarding school and remained lifelong friends until the day Kennedy was shot. At first I found it odd that Billings wasn’t mentioned in more detail in any of the books, until I discovered something interesting about him.

Billings was considered “homosexual” back in those days. There was no such thing as an openly gay man, and the word gay wasn’t even used as it is today. And anything that was even remotely related to “homosexuality” in those days was hidden, pushed to the background, and never ever discussed aloud. Biographers still do this today by going dead silent on people like Lem Billings, and they don’t even realize that by going silent they are only promoting more shame. It’s not about labels. It’s about telling the truth.

However, there is some information about Lem Billings out there. It’s just not information you’ll hear about in the mainstream.

Friends from the 1970s confirmed that Billings was homosexual, but not open to discussing it. In 2006, looking back to the Kennedy Administration, Ben Bradlee said: “I suppose it’s known that Lem was gay….It impressed me that Jack had gay friends.”

Well, JFK didn’t really have gay friends. He had a friend who was a closeted homosexual. There’s a difference.

And there’s this…

Though there has never been any proof of homosexual activity between them, John F. Kennedy would often, and even when married, share a bedroom with Billings.

You can read more about this, here. It’s wiki, but I usually find wiki to be accurate. I don’t care who disagrees with me on that. I find it accurate in the sense that I don’t usually find a slant or a spin. It’s objective.

There’s also a book titled, Jack and Lem: John F. Kennedy and Lem Billings: The Untold Story of an Extraordinary Friendship, that I recently discovered. I haven’t read it yet, but I will very soon.

Here’s another link, too.  There are many things that mention Lem Billings, but not many that mention him being gay. And yet everyone at the time seemed to know he was.

I just have this feeling that life could not have been easy for Lem Billings, not by any means, and I want to know more about him.

Struggle To Make a Movie About Joey Stefano

I’ve posted about the classic gay porn icon, Joey Stefano, several times on this web site. The posts date back to 2013 and I was glad to see this follow up. When I knew Joey Stefano very briefly in the 1990s I never thought I’d be posting about him now in 2019. I met him in a club in New Jersey where he was stripping that night. Stefano, whose real name was Nick Iacona, was from Chester, PA, which is in the Philadelphia area where I live.

This article is about Chad Darnell’s quest to finish a movie about Stefano. It’s been 18 years and Darnell is still working on it. Funding seems to be a huge issue. But overall it’s a good story about determination and the quest to finish a project that often seems impossible to finish.

At one point in 2018, we had a “Joey” lead officially on the hook. I was ecstatic. His agents were ecstatic because he hadn’t taken any film roles since he started his successful series. The day we were going to make the announcement, they emailed he had cold feet and was scared about getting the role wrong.

You can read the whole thing, here. If you’re not familiar with Joey Stefano, there are a few photos.

When Your Hook Up Looks Nothing Like His Photo; Tennessee City Cancels Christmas Parade Over Possible Rainbow Flag Issue; Ryan Field Books

When Your Hook Up Looks Nothing Like His Photo

I guess this is a thing for people who use hook up apps.

It’s happened to the best of us. After chatting with someone on Grindr for hours, you’re horned up as hell and ready to go, then you arrive at his place for that dream hookup and… he looks nothing like his picture.

Here’s the link. It’s actually a fairly long piece about how to handle this situation. I’ve been with Tony since college so I know nothing about hook up apps.

Tennessee City Cancels Christmas Parade Over Possible Rainbow Flag Issue

A small town in Tennessee recently found out not everyone is thrilled about love and acceptance, and that those people can be very aggressive about it.

The small West Tennessee town of Troy has canceled its annual Christmas parade this year after community members responded to a planned “love everybody” float with vitriol and threats of violence because it included a rainbow flag, according to the Tennessean.

Here’s a link to more. There’s a lot more to this story, and it should be read in full. Town officials are saying the parade was canceled because of “continued scheduling conflicts.” The mayor actually made a statement that they are working on solutions to make the parade happen.

The Gay Angle In John Travolta’s "The Fanatic"; The Sunning Your Taint Area Craze; Ryan Field Books

The Gay Angle In John Travolta’s “The Fanatic”

The Fanatic is one of those movies I didn’t hear much about through mainstream promotion, and I probably would have missed it if I didn’t follow Devon Sawa on Twitter. Sawa plays a supporting role with John Travolta in The Fanatic and he shared the information to his followers. And it’s a shame The Fanatic didn’t get more mainstream attention. I liked it and I think the entire cast gave excellent performances. It’s also based on a real life story.

The basic story revolves around Travolta’s star struck character, Moose, who is a huge fan of Devon Sawa’s character, Hunter, and Moose will stop at nothing to get close to Hunter. Hunter is a celebrity and Moose is obsessed with him. You could even say that Moose is in love with Hunter. Moose is also mentally challenged and he doesn’t even realize he’s stalking someone. However,  that alone is interesting in the sense that instead of the symbolic “hunter” going after the “moose,” it’s the other way about in The Fanatic. That couldn’t have been done by accident and I thought it was a nice touch. I like those not so subtle literary touches in films.

The gay angle is also different, because this movie wouldn’t by any means be categorized as LGBTQ content. In fact, it’s not even mentioned aloud in the film, and we’re not even sure Moose identifies as a gay man. All we know is that he’s absolutely infatuated with Hunter and he will stop at nothing to get close to Hunter and get his attention. Of course if I had been writing this script I would have gone into more detail about Moose’s attraction to Hunter. I probably would have had a few more homoerotic scenes as well. The opportunity was there, but there’s really only one slightly homoerotic scene where Moose rests his head on Hunter’s chest for a minute or two, and after that the sexual attraction is just implied. There’s nothing wrong with that either. Sometimes it works even better that way.

The ending is actually a surprise, so no details about that. I just wish they’d given the viewers more information in the end. It was an unexpected, unusual ending, but it didn’t disappoint me either. We streamed this on Amazon and I wouldn’t have a problem recommending it to anyone. Travolta and Sawa both gave wonderful performances. If there’s ever going to be a remake of the film, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, I certainly hope Sawa gets to play George.

Here’s a link to IMDb to read even more.

The Sunning Your Taint Area Craze

There’s a new trend out where people are giving sun exposure to their perineum area. For those who don’t know, the perineum is also known as the taint area…it’s that part of your body that’s located between your anus and your genitals. But you have to do it nude. I’m not joking about this either.

“In a mere 30 seconds of sunlight on your butthole, you will receive more energy from this electric node than you would in an entire day being outside with your clothes on,” says an influencer, who goes by Ra of Earth.

You can read more about sunning your taint area, here.    Or, some are referring to it as sunning your butthole.

Ryan Field Books On Smashwords and Apple; Will and His Grace Try To Recreate ‘I Love Lucy’; 20 Most Dangerous Places For Gay Travelers

Ryan Field Books On Smashwords

I almost always link to Amazon with my books, but I’m lazy about other web sites where books are sold. And I try to distribute books everywhere because I don’t like signing the Amazon exclusive with KU. I think readers and authors should have choices and not be forced into buying books in just one place.

So here’s a post about my books on Smashwords and Apple. There’s a comprehensive list of all my books that dates back more than 10 years.

Both web sites are simple to navigate.

Here’s the Smashwords link.

And this is for Apple.

Will & Grace Try To Recreate ‘I Love Lucy’

I’ve read countless books about the classic old sitcom, I Love Lucy. The history behind the show and Desilu Studios is absolutely fascinating, especially when you consider the fact that no one involved with the show ever thought it would become such a huge part of our culture. The writing, the comedy, and all the work that was put into this show is one of the best examples of television art in the history of entertainment. I’m not sure anyone else has ever matched it. And when you read and learn about how hard everyone worked to achieve that it only makes you respect I Love Lucy even more. I bet most people don’t even know that the famous cinematographer, Karl Freund, who photographed the classic film Metropolis in 1927, was a huge part of the I Love Lucy creation. These people were the ultimate professionals, and Lucy and Desi were no slouches.

With that said, I’m not so sure about what Will & Grace are going to do with this.

Now in its final season, the cast of Will & Grace have revealed the show will pay tribute to iconic US sitcom I Love Lucy in a forthcoming episode scheduled to air in the spring.

Here’s a link to read more.

20 Most Dangerous Places For Gay Travelers

When Tony and I travel cross country by car to Palm Springs we never fully relax. Even though we’ve never had any homophobic incidents that we are aware of, we’re used to living in places that have large LGBTQ populations like New Hope, PA and Palm Springs, CA. So when we get into the middle of America we’re more aware of our surroundings. We think differently, we act differently, and we never let down our guards. And most of all, we never assume anything. However, this article takes gay travel to another level…a scarier level.

Depending on where they’re headed, gay travelers can face great risks. In April, the country of Brunei enacted an Islamic law making it legal to flog and stone LGBTQ people to death. And it’s not the only country to have the death penalty on the books: A few others include Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Iran. According to Equaldex, a range of gay activities are illegal in 71 countries.

Here’s a link to the full piece. They also mention a few safe countries like Sweden.

Gay Dad Who Left His Husband For Daughter’s Boyfriend Is Having Kids Now; Gay Russian Forced Into Hiding After YouTube Interview: Ryan Field Books

Gay Dad Who Left His Husband For Daughter’s Boyfriend Is Having Kids Now

Well this is something that made me look twice. Obviously, it can happen.

It’s the story of two very wealthy gay dads from the UK who gained recognition 20 years ago because they wanted to be legally recognized as joint parents. I honestly don’t remember them at all, but it sounds as if they were very well known. There’s a lot of back story that’s worth reading, with respect to gay couples having kids and raising families.

Just like any other heteronormative couple, over the years the two gay dads faced certain challenges, and their lives and circumstances changed.

However, last week it was revealed that one of the dads, Barrie, 50, had decided to split with husband, Tony, 55, after falling head over heels for the ex-boyfriend of his 19-year-old daughter, Saffron. The two men had been together for 32 years.

It’s actually not a negative story. You can read it all, here.

Oh, and there are comments. You could probably skip them and not miss much this time.

Gay Russian Forced Into Hiding After YouTube Interview

On the global front, things continue to remain complicated for LGBTQ people in Russia, especially with that ridiculous ‘gay propaganda’ law.

A gay Russian man is in hiding after Russian authorities opened a criminal case over a YouTube video in which he was interviewed by children, a case that has drawn attention from human-rights activists.

Here’s the link. According to this link, the entire interview is G-rated, there’s no talk of sex, and all they do is talk about what it’s like to be gay in a general sense. Now they want to lock him up.

Will a Penis Bee Sting Cause Permanent Erection?; Jason Derulo Denies Photoshopping His Penis Photo; Ryan Field Books

Will a Penis Bee Sting Cause Permanent Erection?

There was an article out that talked about what happens if a bee stings you in your penis. Apparently, some people thought it was true and the article made it to Snopes. Here’s something from the original article.

Bee sting to the penis can permanently enlarge it
This unusual method was used by the royals of ancient Egypt to permanently enlarge their manhood.
But Snopes clarified things.
This item was not a factual recounting of real-life events. The article originated with an entertainment website that does not publish factual stories.
In other words, it’s a parody site.
Here’s a link to Snopes. And here’s a link to the original article. I may have to share this on Facebook and Twitter, just to see…the original article, not the one from Snopes.
Jason Derulo Denies Photoshopping His Penis Photo
This was a bold move. Jason Derulo posted a photo of himself in tight black shorts with a clear image of the outline of his penis. I would imagine it’s erect. It’s not full on male full frontal nudity, however, it leaves little to the imagination. But some people questioned whether it was photo shopped or not.

When TMZ caught up with Jason, they asked him about it and he denied altering the pic. “Photoshop? Photoshop? Don’t make me [pull it out]. It’s not enough women in this area. Just know that us Haitians, we look different,” he said.

I probably would have let him pull it out, but straight people tend to get giddy about those things.

Here’s the link to more, with the photo. I guess we’ll never really know for certain whether it was photo shopped or not. I just like the fact that he wasn’t afraid to do this, or to talk about it.

Open Letter To His Gay Teenage Self; Apparently Two Men Dancing Together Is Still Groundbreaking; Ryan Field Books

Open Letter To His Gay Teenage Self

I like reading stories like this because I think all gay men can relate to them, at least in one way or another. I often see non-gay people trying to compare the gay experience to other experiences and that never works out. You simply cannot compare a gay person’s experiences to a straight person’s.

A local Philadelphia guy wrote this letter to himself. But not to who he is now. The message is for  who he was when he was 14 and terrified to come out. He’s hoping to encourage other young gay people, too.

Here’s a sample, and I really love his line about celebrating more than just sexuality. I say this here all the time in posts and I try to make it clear that being gay is not just about sex and sexuality. And we have to realize that if we want the rest of the heteronormative world to recognize it.

Your current motto is cover it up and always sport your “straightness” at all costs. You’re thinking right now, “Exactly. And why do we need a gay parade anyways? Straight people aren’t touting their heterosexualness.” But what you don’t realize is that Pride Month and the parades are to celebrate a movement bigger than your sexuality—a word from the wise, it’s not all about you.

Here’s a link to read more.

Apparently Two Men Dancing Together Is Still Groundbreaking

I often take for granted that two men dancing together is perfectly normal to see…for me and everyone in my circles. Because of where I live and how I’ve tailored my life I also often forget that the majority of people in heteronormative society rarely ever see two men dancing together. Up until recently, it simply was not done. They are actually calling this ‘groundbreaking.’

And people complained about two men dancing together.

According to The Guardian, the BBC received 189 complaints about Radebe and di Prima’s performance. One viewer reportedly said they wouldn’t watch the show again if the same-sex pairing became a regular occurrence.

And there you have it. According to this article, it’s the first time an individual same-sex couple have danced together.

Here’s the link, and there’s a video.

Kamala Harris Calls Buttigieg Naive For His Comments On His Gay Experience; Vogue’s Third Gender Cover Star; Ryan Field Books

Kamala Harris Calls Buttigieg Naive For His Comments On His Gay Experience

Kamala Harris recently called Pete Buttigieg “naive” for “comparing struggles.” And this is very typical. Straight people will do this all the time, even though they have no clue whatsoever what it’s like to be gay, or what it’s like to grow up in the closet. I could continue, but I’m keeping this short.

However, Buttigieg was questioned about her comments and he gave the perfect reply:

Asked by NBC News about Harris’ remarks, Buttigieg rejected them and said “there’s no equating those two experiences.”

He’s absolutely correct.  I’m sure Kamala Harris has faced her share of issues as a woman, however, she never had to hide the fact that she is a straight woman. That is a privilege, and that alone makes the two experiences different.

If you’re not gay, don’t splain to gay people about their unique experiences and we won’t splain what it’s like being a straight to you. It’s that simple.

Here’s a link to the rest.

Vogue’s Third Gender Cover Star

There aren’t enough articles out there about the third gender, and there should be more. In fact, there needs to be more awareness about this because so many people simply do not understand what third gender means.

Vogue Mexico has featured a third-gender cover star for the first time. The magazine is believed to be the first in Vogue’s 120-year history to feature a ‘muxe’ (pronounced MOO-she) model.

Here’s a link to the rest.

Here’s a link to wiki where third gender is defined in simple terms.  I think it’s a good brief explanation for people who aren’t aware.

LGBTQ Book Review: The Ghost and Mr. Moore by Ryan Field; Vegans Get Butthurt Over Male Students Posing Naked with Sheep; Ryan Field Books

LGBTQ Book Review: The Ghost and Mr. Moore by Ryan Field

The Ghost and Mr. Moore by Ryan Field (2009-12-11)Sometimes I come across these book reviews by accident, and I didn’t even know they were there. As thankful as I always am for reviews, good or bad, I have always believed that authors should distance themselves from readers in that sense. Let the readers discuss the books without the author’s input. But this book is older now. I wrote it about 10 years ago, and the review dates back to 2018. So I think it’s safe to share.

I definitely enjoyed this light-hearted, low-angst story with fun characters and a storyline (with several subplots) that held my interest. The Ghost and Mr. Moore is a story with lots of heart and may even bring a tear to your eye from time to time. If you’re a fan of the original Ghost and Mrs. Muir (or ghost stories in general) and don’t mind more than a generous sprinkling of sex in your stories, then you may want to check out The Ghost and Mr. Moore. Mr. Field did an excellent job of this retelling of an old favorite and as usual, did not disappoint.

It’s much longer, and you can read the rest here. It’s actually a well executed web site in general, with a lot more book reviews you might want to check out.

And here’s an Amazon link to The Ghost and Mr. Moore. It was a fun book to write and I based a lot of the story on my own personal experiences in Provincetown. We haven’t been to P’town in a while, but we used to spend every Labor Day week, New Year’s Eve, and Halloween on the Cape in Provincetown. I think we did that routine for about 15 years.

Vegans Get Butthurt Over Male Students Posing Naked with Sheep

From the way it sounds, this started out as an innocent group project to raise money for charity by a group of cute young guys in veterinary school. They had the best of intentions. They simply posed naked with sheep. Unfortunately, vegans got butthurt and ruined all the fun.

A photo featuring seven veterinarians-to-be posing naked with sheep elicited strong condemnation from a vegan activist group, so much so that the school issued a formal apology and vowed to remove the photo from the upcoming calendar.

You can check this out, here. There’s a photo of the veterinarians, too. It looks harmless enough to me. But then again, my favorite meal is a nice big juicy piece of prime rib.
