Billy Porter Talks About Straight Actors Playing Gay Face

I knew this discussion was going to continue and I don’t think it will stop any time soon. This time Billy Porter talks about being an openly gay and black actor struggling to succeed in a business where they give the best gay roles to straight actors. And those straight actors usually wind up with awards for playing gay, and then they go right back to playing straight again. But what really makes this interesting is that he does this in front of straight actors, Hugh Grant and Richard Madden, both of whom recently played gay face in highly publicized mainstream projects.

‘Because straight men playing gay, everybody wants to give them an award,’ added Billy. ‘”Thank you for gracing us with your straight presence.” That gets tiresome.
‘So here I sit, I can’t get the gay parts, I can’t get the straight parts.’
Here’s the rest. I love Billy Porter even more now.
Side Note: Richard Madden plays gay in the upcoming Elton John biopic, Rocketman. And that’s the same film where another straight male actor plays Elton John. Interesting.

The Straight Pride Parade In Boston
If you look back at the history of Pride you’ll find that the entire concept of Pride came about because of all the inequality and injustice that LGBTQ people have had to deal with in a heteronormative world. And we are still dealing with it on many levels. So whenever I see something about “Straight Pride,” I find it amusing.
The city of Boston will likely be holding a Straight Pride parade in August thanks to the work of a far-right group called Super Happy Fun America.

Reader Reviews: “This story will stay with you and you will feel you know every character and the beauty of their home in the mountains of North Carolina. A sequel is in order and a film as well. Bravo Field”
