Russell Tovey In The Pass

Most people know Russell Tovey from HBO’s gay series, Looking. He’s an openly gay actor from the UK who’s always been up front and honest with his fans.

Tovey’s been busy working on other projects since Looking, one of which is a film titled, The Pass.

I had a chance to watch The Pass last night on Netflix, and I loved it. It starts out lagging, and you’re not totally sure where it’s going, or if it’s actually going somewhere. But once the story line starts to move it becomes so captivating you can’t stop watching. In many ways, it reminded me of a Tennessee Williams play.

It’s not a gay romance, and it is somewhat dark at times, but I think it captures everything I’ve ever heard about closeted gay footballers.

Here’s a link to IMDb.  Most of the reviews tend to be good, and Tovey gives and excellent performance.

Straight Actors Playing Gay: Alex Landi and Ewan McGregor

Back in the day it was always typical to see a straight actor playing gay face, and that’s mostly because we didn’t know any better, and, because very few actors were out of the closet. No one gave it a second thought…until recently. But nowadays I’m seeing a shift in the way people are thinking.

With the said, I’m linking to two current stories about straight actors playing gay roles.

Alex Landi is playing a gay surgeon on Grey’s anatomy. He’s strongly defending the rights of straight male actors to play gay face in this article. He also claims, somewhat ironically, that he’s trying to break down racial stereotypes. But he mentions nothing about when white actors play Asian rolesHere’s the link to this one.

And here’s a story about Ewan McGregor playing the fashion designer, Halston, in an upcoming project. Until recently, McGregor was married to a woman for many years and he has 4 children.

And the debate continues. I can’t help remembering Nick Jonas and all the gay baiting he did.

Erasing Queerness in Bohemian Rhapsody

Whenever I hear a straight person raving about Bohemian Rhapsody I just smile and listen. I understand it all too well.

But I have been following reviews and commentaries about Bohemian Rhapsody, and there are other opinions, some from queer people, that deserve recognition, too. And you won’t find them anywhere in the mainstream.

Up until recently, I didn’t know they released a trailer in 2018 that was accused of straight washing Freddie Mercury. I also didn’t know they released a second trailer very quickly in an attempt to tone down the controversy.

In any event, I found an interesting perspective I wanted to share.

Bohemian Rhapsody shamefully reinforces these things in its revisionism, a problem that stems from both its PG-13 rating and the fact that the surviving straight members of Queen had too much of a hand in telling a dead queer man’s tale.

Here’s a link to the full commentary. It mentions a few more facts I didn’t know.

People Wanted Gaga To Win the Golden Globe

Glenn Close won the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture, and a lot of people wanted Lady Gaga to win.

The Lady Gaga fans who weren’t pleased, posted some vituperative Tweets.

Here’s a link where you can read what they had to say.  I like Lady Gaga and Glenn Close equally, but unfortunately there can only be one winner.

There’s actually a great photo of Glenn Close as they announce her as the winner.
