You Can’t Copyright Book Titles; High School Footballers Accused of Rape During Homophobic Hazing; The Asexual Allegory in The Wizard of Oz; First Male Contraceptive Gel

You Can’t Copyright Book Titles

Yesterday I saw a post on social media where a very well known author was accused of stealing a title from an indie author no one has ever heard of. The well known author was not thrilled about being accused of plagiarism this way, and she had every right to be upset about it.

But I see a lot of this happening online with those who don’t know any better, and never take the time to learn. So here’s a list of 5 things that can’t be copyrighted, and this is the first…

Copyright protection does not extend to titles, names, slogans or short phrases, the Copyright Office has made that much very clear. You can not copyright your name, the title of your post or any short phrase that you use to identify a work.

Here’s a link for the rest.

Here’s another good link on the same topic. They give some good explanations at this link, and it’s dated 2018.

High School Footballers Accused of Rape During Homophobic Hazing

This is another one of those disturbing stories.

Four high school football players in Maryland are accused of raping several of their teammates with a broken broom handle during a homophobic hazing that is being described as “astonishingly cruel”, the Washington Post reports.

Here’s the rest. They’re all 15 years old.

The Asexual Allegory in The Wizard of Oz

This is an interesting interpretation of an old classic. I like to keep an open mind with these things. I might not always agree, but I’m always open to the way other people interpret art, literature, and films. I think it’s all subjective.

This year’s programming for Scottish Queer International Film Festival couldn’t be more diverse and involves a retelling of The Wizard of Oz.

Wright researched further and found ‘an asexual reading of The Wizard of Oz online, posted on The Asexual Visibility & Education Network in the US by a user called Spoofmaster.’

You can read it in full, here. Frankly, I’ve always wondered if Mary Poppins was a lesbian. The author of Mary Poppins, PL Travers, allegedly had lesbian relationships. The mainstream tends to skim over these things in their quest to keep everything perfectly heteronormative, and they’ve conditioned most of us to think that way.

First Male Contraceptive Gel

It’s unreal how long it takes these products to become a reality for consumers. And it makes me wonder what else might be waiting for “trial.”

The researchers developed the idea more than 10 years ago and created the new birth control gel for men. Now it’s ready for trial.

Here’s a link. If you’re interested in being part of the trial there’s a link with the article.

LGBTQ Helpline Calls In Taiwan Surge After Marriage Vote; Rider University’s No Way To Chick-fil-A; Ryan Murphy’s Star On Hollywood Walk of Fame

LGBTQ Helpline Calls In Taiwan Surges After Marriage Vote

This is what can happen when life altering equality issues like same sex marriage are left up to common voters to decide. And my heart breaks for the LGBTQ people in Taiwan.

LGBTI people in Taiwan are suffering greatly after losing three referendums on their rights, with calls to a LGBTI helpline jumping 40%.
On Saturday (24 November), the country went to the polls to vote in general elections and the referendums. Voters said no to changing the Civil Code to allow same-sex marriage. They also voted against teaching gender equality in schools and to keep the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.
Here’s more. It wasn’t easy in the US either, and I remember feeling down most of the time during the process of legalizing same sex marriage. It took decades.

Rider University’s No Way To Chick-fil-A
This happened at Rider University in New Jersey, which isn’t that far from where I live in New Hope, PA. So I heard about this on local news earlier this week.
A private university in New Jersey removed Chick-fil-A as an option for a new campus restaurant due to the company’s perceived anti-LGBTI record.
Chick-fil-A responded with this statement.
‘We have no policy of discrimination against any group, and we do not have a political or social agenda. More than 120,000 people from all different backgrounds and beliefs represent the Chick-fil-A brand.’

Ryan Murphy’s Star On Hollywood Walk of Fame
It’s not easy for anyone who is LGBTQ to reach this point in life, especially in Hollywood. He’s brought a lot more LGBTQ content into the mainstream, which I think helped sway public opinion in many ways.
This just in: Ryan Murphy is being honored with his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, joining the ranks of several other iconic LGBTQ celebrities, including Ellen Degeneres, Elton John, and Nathan Lane.

Playing Gayface: Taron Egerton On How Gay Feels; "Stop Your Gay Agenda" On Pride Mural; Russia’s Gay Priest

Playing Gayface: Taron Egerton On How Gay Feels

Here’s another story about Taron Egerton playing gayface in a new movie about Elton John. It’s not a rant. It’s just an observation.

They pay him to say things like this:

“I actually think the gay community will be quite surprised by quite how gay it feels. I loved every second if it.

Here’s the link.  Because who knows how “gay it feels” better than someone who’s not even gay.

“Stop Your Gay Agenda” On Pride Mural

Here’s what LGBTQ people in Texas are dealing with.

Vandals have defaced a rainbow mural in Texas, writing “stop your gay agenda please” and spray painting a giant “X” across the Pride-themed art installation.

Here’s more. There’s a photo. It really was a beautiful wall before it was defaced with graffiti. I also know there are many gay-friendly cities in Texas, so I don’t think of this as a reflection on the entire state. It could happen anywhere.

Russia’s Gay Priest

Here’s something more positive and uplifting.

At just 22 years old, Aleksandr Khmelyov is already running services as an openly gay priest, and has become a well-known figure in the St. Petersburg’s LGBT and activist communities.

You can check this out, here. It goes into more detail about what it’s like to be gay in Russia.

Hugh Jackman Laughed During A Gay Kiss; Satanic Temple and Sabrina Lawsuit Settles; Gay Student Comes Out To Catholic School

Hugh Jackman Laughed During A Gay Kiss

Here’s another one about a straight actor who played gayface and thought it was funny to kiss a man. I’m so used to these things by now it’s not worth a rant.

Jackman played gayface in the life story of Peter Allen. And this is what happened while he was kissing a man.

He explains: “I was literally just locking lips. I started to laugh so hard. So I stay kissing him, because I thought, ‘I’m just going to laugh. I’m going to stay here until it subsides’ and it never subsided and the whole audience could see my body shaking, so they started.”

But he claims he doesn’t mind the gay rumors…but his wife isn’t happy about them. Go figure.

You can read the rest here. I think the comments that go with this article left by readers are fascinating. I love reading them.

Satanic Temple and Sabrina Lawsuit Settles

I posted about this one around Halloween. I watched the whole Sabrina series and loved it. The Satanic Temple sued Netflix and Warner Brothers for copyright infringement. They give a full explanation at the link.

Announcing the settlement of their lawsuit, Stuart de Haan, attorney for The Satanic Temple, wrote,  “The Satanic Temple is pleased to announce that the lawsuit it recently filed against Warner Bros. and Netflix has been amicably settled.”

Here’s more.

Gay Student Comes Out To Catholic School

Here’s something encouraging. I love what younger LGBTQ people are doing these days. After reading about people like Hugh Jackman above, it’s this kind of story that gives me hope for the future. No one is laughing at this kid because he’s gay.

An Australian student came out to his Catholic school during an assembly packed full of his classmates and teachers.

‘Life was easier living as the straight eldest son. I had spent so long behind the façade of a confident, heterosexual man that I wasn’t sure if I knew how to be me.’

Some things are changing for the better.

First Nude Paris Restaurant; The Last Mile and the Horror of AIDS; Dolce & Gabanna Founders Public Racism Apology; Barilla Pasta Uses Lesbian Couple

First Nude Paris Restaurant

I’m a big fan of nudity or clothing optional. I love nude beaches, and when we were looking for a condo in Palm Springs a few years ago we seriously considered a nude condo complex in a gated community. So I find this one fascinating. I would love to go.

France already boasts hundreds of beaches, campsites, and spa centers meant to be enjoyed in the nude, and now, the famously clothing-optional country is breaking new ground in naturism. According to local newspaper Le Parisien, the first nude restaurant in Paris opened to the public on Friday—and local naturists are already big fans of the new spot.

Here’s more. For those of you who never went to a nude beach or anywhere clothing optional, the most interesting part of the experience is that once you’re nude for about 15 minutes, you don’t even realize it. It’s not a big deal anymore. I just becomes normal.

The Last Mile and the Horror of AIDS

Back in the 90s before the Internet really took off, every LGBT person in the Philadelphia area picked up a copy of The Philadelphia Gay News…PGN. It was free in all the gay clubs and gay businesses, including all the gay clubs here in New Hope, PA. It was filled with interesting news items, and many were about AIDS. And that’s how we got most of our information. If it hadn’t been for publications like PGN, we wouldn’t have known anything.

The Last Mile looks back at AIDS even before the movie, Philadelphia, and how things have changed since the Reagan era.

Now Coca-Cola has partnered with the noted anti-AIDS charity (Red) to produce a new video recalling that pre-Philadelphia world, the impact of the film, and how American progress since Reagan (yes, even President George W. Bush became a champion in the fight)  has helped stem the spread of HIV, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.

Here’s a link. For anyone who isn’t old enough to remember anything about AIDS, it’s worth checking out.

Dolce & Gabanna Founders Public Racism Apology

They should be apologizing for the prices they charge, too.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have made a 90 second video saying ‘sorry’ in Mandarin.
This is an attempt to salvage their reputation in the world’s most important luxury market.

Here’s the rest. There’s a lot more at the link. I prefer Versace.

Barilla Pasta Uses Lesbian Couple

This is surprising because not that long ago Guido Barilla said he’d never use a “homosexual” family in an ad.

Barilla gave attendees to the World Pasta Championship boxes of spaghetti with a lesbian couple on the front.
The company, who sponsor the event held in Italy, came under fire for comments made in 2013 against same-sex parents.
You can check that out, here. They mention how the company has been trying to change since that homophobic comment was made. I follow the Keto diet and I don’t even eat pasta, but I’d like to know if they ever apologized.

Big Gay Energy Tweets; On Tumblr Deleting Erotic Gay Art; Twitter Protects Trans People;

Big Gay Energy Tweets

This is about as silly as it gets. But they pubbed it, so I’m linking.

Big Gay Energy. It’s like Big D*ck Energy, but even bigger. And definitely much, much gayer.

Here’s the rest. It’s a series of Tweets that supposedly shows big gay energy. You have to take it all in the spirit of fun.

On Tumbler Deleting Gay Erotic Art

I’ve actually had things like this happen to me with gay erotic romances.

Erotic artist Jas Purrlock has used Tumblr to share her sexy artwork for five years. But though the social platform allows erotic art and nude adult content, Tumblr recently deleted her account for “inappropriate content involving or depicting minors.”

Here’s more. According to this article, her work does NOT depict minors. The same thing happened to my books a few years ago. None of my books have ever contained underage characters, but they’ve been targeted for gay content.

Twitter Protects Trans People

A lot of people are applauding Twitter for this recent move, me included.

You can now report Twitter users for targeted deadnaming and misgendering.
Twitter updated its Terms of Service last night (23 November) to protect trans people from online abuse.

Here’s the link to this one. It gets into an explanation about targeting and misgendering. A lot of people still don’t “get” misgendering and how wrong it is.

An Extremely Masculine Gay Bottom; Gay Widower Denied Marriage Benefits; Trump and Trans Military Ban

An Extremely Masculine Gay Bottom

I know that the headline above sounds like an oxymoron, but it is a reality in some cases, with some gay bottoms. And it shows how some stereotypes are not always accurate.

Stereotypes ruin the party again. One guy says he has a problem keeping men’s attention as a black, “extremely masc” bottom because he doesn’t conform to perceptions of what bottoms should look and act like.

Here’s more. You’ll love the comments.

Gay Widower Denied Marriage Benefits

This one is tricky and you have to read the whole thing.

The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) has a policy that says a spouse must be married to their partner for at least nine months before they’re eligible to receive a deceased partner’s survivor benefits.
That’s not a problem for most couples, but it is for Michael Ely, a 65-year-old gay Arizona resident. He was denied SSA survivor benefits when his husband of six months died of cancer in 2015.

Here’s the link. They explain in more detail why Ely is looking for justice, and that he’s not looking for special treatment. I hope he wins his case.

Trump and Trans Military Ban

Here’s something we’ll have to keep watching in December. From what this says, Trump is bypassing the normal legal process by going directly to the Supreme Court.

Donald Trump and his administration directly asked the Supreme Court on Friday (23 November) to rule on their proposed transgender military ban.

You can read it all here. It goes into a lot more detail. There have been a lot of misleading headlines on this story, so be prudent with what you read.

Here’s another article about it from a mainstream publication.  It’s being considered highly irregular.

Real World Danny Roberts Comes Out As HIV Positive; Taron Egerton Thinks Kevin Spacey Is a Flirt; 57% LGBT Candidates Won Mid-Terms

Real World Danny Roberts Comes Out As HIV Positive

People like Danny Roberts set a good example for everyone.

On the eve of World AIDS Day, the retired reality star just revealed that he’s living with HIV in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Check out the link here.

Taron Egerton Thinks Kevin Spacey Is a Flirt

I just posted about straight actor, Taron Egerton, playing gay face. And now there’s this.

Taron Egerton, who just debunked his rumored coming-out with the whole “I’m just secure in my sexuality” refrain, is now making controversial comments on Kevin Spacey’s alleged sexual misconduct.

Here’s the rest. The comments are…well…interesting. But I don’t think the #MeToo Movement would appreciate them.

57% LGBT Candidates Won Mid-Terms

This is definitely a positive sign that the world, indeed, is changing.

As final results from the United States’ midterm election races rolled in over recent weeks, it became clear: there was, in fact, a rainbow wave.

Here’s the link.

San Diego Pride On Thanksgiving; Coming Out As Gay On Thanksgiving; Gay Thanksgiving Gives Sense of Community

San Diego Pride On Thanksgiving

Here’s some gay Thanksgiving news. For those of you who don’t think some gay people have it more difficult during the holidays, you might want to read this in full.

While I know all too well the hardship that the holidays can bring to our community, I’m also grateful for our resilience. It is a thing of beauty to watch our community come together in support, as we always do, with innovative approaches to friendship, family, and love.

Here’s a link.

Coming Out As Gay On Thanksgiving

This seems to be a popular topic this year. This article talks about 16 ways to come out to your family on Thanksgiving.

But telling people you’re gay is a deeply personal process that’s different for everyone. There’s no set method or time. You may not be ready to spill the tea for all of Facebook or share your experience in a deeply moving art piece, and that’s okay! Maybe you aren’t the showy type.

You can check this out, here.

Gay Thanksgiving Gives Sense of Community

Here’s a nice story about an excellent tradition at the University of Maine.

Wilde Stein, the University of Maine’s Queer-Straight Alliance, is celebrating its 45th year on campus. Every year, the group contributes time and hard work to provide a Thanksgiving meal for the LGBTQ community to share together. Wilde Stein started as a small student group and is one of the oldest queer-straight alliances in the country. Shortly after its inception, the group saw the need for an event where students could gather and enjoy Thanksgiving, especially if they weren’t being accepted at home.

You can read it all, here.  I know a lot of gay people who only celebrate with their gay friends because many of them aren’t welcome with family. Yes, that still does happen. So gay people celebrate with their extended gay families.

Amazon Streaming TV: Gay Movies Better Than Netflix; Adam Rippon Retires From Skating; Straight Taron Egerton On His Sexuality

Amazon Streaming TV: Gay Movies

Even though I’ve watched a few TV shows through Amazon…and loved them…I never had a chance to check out the gay content. I did that this week, finally, and it’s very impressive. It’s much better than Netflix as far as quantity goes. In fact, there are so many titles it’s hard to choose which one you want to watch. And almost all have a trailer that you can check out first.

Last night I streamed a gay movie titled, Steel. Here’s the description on IMDb. I don’t like to review these things because they are so subjective, and I don’t want to be that amateur online reviewer who simply gives a basic plot description and pretends to know better. I liked Steel, and I would recommend it.

Strong emotions – fear and panic, self-search and isolation, love and sex, self-denial and self-discovery – a ride on an emotional roller coaster while trying to find one’s way into life.

Here’s the IMDb link, to Steel, and if you haven’t watched Amazon streaming TV, you might want to check out the gay content. As I said, it’s much better than Netflix. And it’s real gay content. Not gay content told through the POV of someone who is straight and has gay friends.

Adam Rippon Retires From Skating

I follow Rippon on Twitter and I usually like everything he Tweets. He’s funny, too, and no pretense. He has a nice sense of humor.

He recently announced he’s retiring from skating, and then showed the world a letter he wrote to himself years ago.

“You are going through a really tough time right now. You’ve just missed qualifying for the Olympic team for the second time in a row. You feel confused and you feel like a failure. It might not make sense right now, but this is truly one of the most important moments in your life,” he wrote.

You can read the entire letter here.  It’s very good.

Straight Taron Egerton On His Sexuality

Apparently, Taron Egerton is the guy who’s playing the role of Elton John in Rocketman. And now he’s talking about his own sexuality. There’s been speculation about whether he’s gay or not.

I’m not gay but two of my mates came out when I was 15 and it was a joy to support them because, as a group, we are all secure in who we are.’

Well, they always have gay friends, and they let you know it.

Here’s the link. He also makes a few comments about Kevin Spacey. It’s interesting to note they didn’t hire a US actor to play the part of Elton John. That might not have been believable.
